Little Liu's Literarium

Little Liu's Literarium We are a closed literacy charity organization. I hope everyone enjoyed the books while libraries had limited access!

Permanently closed.

Hello everyone,

Thank you those who participated in Book Club while schools were closed during the pandemic. We loved the chance to reach and connect with a broad range of our community during that time of isolation.

As some of you know, we have decided to transition back to our original model of partnering with schools to provide books to children and families in our communities. We are looking forward to sharing more about our progress as the year progresses. The benefits of doing so will allow our finances to spread to more children with the decreased shipping costs and damages being handled by our partnering publishers, and coordinating with teachers where appropriate to support classroom learning. We will still continue to provide multilingual books and audiobooks to qualifying students through partner schools as well as children in their household from birth through 5th grade.

We know that this is disappointing to some of you, particularly our parents of infants. With these changes, we will be able to provide 50% more books to children with the savings from shopping costs and losses. Our objective is to provide as many children as possible with age appropriate, language appropriate, accessible books, and changing our operation will allow us to reach this goal.

We hope to provide other resources to support literacy amongst families in the future, and we continue to value and appreciate community feedback on suggestions to consider to best reach our goal of closing the literacy achievement gap in Washington.

Thank you again everyone for all of your support. We truly appreciate you taking the time to read, share stories, and talk about books with the community over the past year.

And off to the post the many books went! Some of you should have received books for your littles already, and most should by the end of the week. Thank you for reading, and have a lovely summer! We hope to be back after.

The best way to prevent summer reading loss or ~80% of the literacy achievement gap is to keep your kids reading during the summer months too, and having books readily available at home is one way to increase reading. 📖 Enjoy!

UPDATE: Orders are closed and sent to the publisher. Thank you everyone who participated this month!

Hello families,

Please see the link below for this month's free book club orders.

Our theme this month is Global & Inclusive Readers. The book selections include stories from around the world with people of different abilities, family systems, and backgrounds.

📖Please order up to 3 books per child.
📖We will be taking a break through the summer in hopes that my health improves.
📖Orders will be open until May 7th at 7 PM.
📖Place only one order per family or classroom.
📖Your books are expected to arrive by June 7th, 2021 due to the additional time to pack the additional books.
📖Books are sorted by language, and are also available with general age recommendations as well. The reading level gets harder the closer to the end of the list a book is.
📖We have 6 audiobooks available this month. I strongly recommend them for families with children with disabilities that impact reading and English language learning families.
📖Children of the World is a wonderfully inclusive book I hope everyone selects for their home.

All orders for book club this month are packed up and will be mailed today. Don't mind the bath crayon on the wall - someone small was making art. Most orders will arrive between Monday and Wednesday the 26th - 28th, and then because it's media mail and USPS can be a creature of chaos, there will be a few unlucky souls who will receive books a bit later. As usual, all packaging can be composted at your municipality, but after a year long experiment with my backyard compost I would not recommend your own home.

We had a new record number of participants this month!

147 books to 147 children and 79 families and 67 books to classrooms and little local community libraries.

Thank you everyone for your patience while we've explored order systems to decrease the administrative load for me and less storage required. Orders will be the same next month as this month! To all the moms, dads, foster parents, and families who participated, thank you and have a lovely read with your littles and bigs about the difficult emotions we are all facing during these unusual times.

Our theme for May is stories from around the world, with most stories coming from a publisher that prioritizes diversity, representation, kindness, and equality for all humans in the most humanizing way of all - with stories of humans being human instead of their stories being predominantly about their disability, color, sexual orientation, or other "other" factors. See you May 1st with a link to place orders for the month!

NOW CLOSED. Submitting orders to publishers, and ETA for arrival is the end of the month.

Book club orders for April are now open, and this month's theme is emotions & empathy. We have an emphasis on worry and anxiety this month due to a lot of children we work with struggling with anxiety over the past year for so many reasons.

We're adjusting systems (yet again - I promise we are getting closer to the final version) this month that will hopefully allow us to serve more members of the community with the time I have available.

About book club:
📚Orders will be open until April 7th at 10PM PDT. We cannot accept late orders. Books should arrive at the address you provided by the end of the month.
📚We provide free books mailed to your home to qualifying children including sing-alongs, audiobooks, English, Spanish and other languages to qualifying children in Washington state.
📚Please have your qualifying children choose one book each. Children qualify if they have a disability that impacts literacy, live in a low-income community or is a low-income family, are an English learner, bilingual, or multilingual, are homeless or trauma impacted, or meet another qualifying criteria attributed to the literacy achievement gap. For more information about qualifying criteria, please visit our information pages for Bridge the Gap Books or HEAR on our website.
📚Please use the coupon code APRILBOOKCLUB. Please do not enter any payment information or pay for books. If it asks you for payment information, please verify you entered the coupon code. If the coupon code does not work, verify you have not already submitted your order for this month. The link for this month is (and hopefully for future months as well):
https://www.literarium.org/book-club-shop
📚Please verify your order is correct and complete before submitting it. We are operated by one volunteer between work, school, and parenting, so please understand we simply do not have the manpower or infrastructure available to answer questions about order status updates prior to their expected arrival date or modify orders submitted incorrectly or incompletely.

If you know members of your community who would benefit, please share! If you know members of your community who would struggle with English literacy too much to sign up on their own, please help them!

If you are looking for books for your qualifying students or patients, please email me directly at [email protected].

We will be doing book orders to publishers after the closing date. Consequently, books will arrive near the end of the month instead of the middle of the month.

Happy reading!
Stephanie

PDT. No podemos aceptar pedidos tardíos.

Gracias,
Stephanie

Well, my shoulders are sore! 16 packages have already been mailed and should arrive by today if they haven't arrived already, and 30 more all packed up to make it to the post by Monday if not today for books headed to 46 families this month. That's a total of 102 books (13 audiobooks, 15 Spanish or bilingual books, and 74 English books) headed to 102 kids!

I hope everyone enjoys their books this month! Our focus was non-fiction books with a couple fictional stragglers. Next month we will be focusing on books revolving around feelings & kindness, with likely at least one straggler about brushing teeth due to Little Liu's recent struggles with oral hygeine.

Please let us know if there are any issues with books arriving safely. We took some feedback from Amazonians about decreasing our packaging, but I'm a little nervous about it!

We've tried to make the form a bit more accessible for larger families, so please let me know if you have any questions or concerns this month. Form submissions will be open through Sunday, March 7th, but earlier submissions are less likely to receive substituted books if we run low on inventory.

Thank you again, and I hope you enjoyed last month's books! We're looking at adding more bilingual Spanish and English books next month, and we're looking into providing books in more languages which is why we ask about languages spoken at home this month.

Form:

Update: Most books look like they're arriving today or already arrived with a couple slotted to arrive tomorrow! Thank you everyone who participated, and enjoy reading with your children! We will be back with more books next month.

Unless you are a teacher or steward of a little library, your free book club books have been mailed today! If you are a teacher or a steward of a little library, eta is the end of the week pending Little Liu shenanigans. ❤️

In case you were curious, 150~ish books packaged to 65 homes definitely will fit in a car trunk if you dropped 16 off at the post office already. However, they will not go down the postal package drop off shoot without a post person working directly behind it making sure there isn't a block! 📚

Hope they all arrive quickly and safely! Families in the first round received theirs as quickly as the next day!

We are still taking sign ups for our free children's book club for February through tomorrow, the 6th. Books are delivered via media mail to families in Washington, and we provide a book per child. We provide books for children from birth through elementary in Spanish, English, and Audiobooks.

We gave out 74 books yesterday to families in our community, including 16 Spanish or Bilingual books and 9 through our HEAR audiobook program. We also had 19 families sign up for info on our monthly Book Club! It was wonderful to see everyone yesterday and share a love for kids reading from afar. We'll be back at a new location for our next book stop in another two weeks. For now, time to mail some books!

If you're in Washington state, have children between birth and 12 that are an English learner, have a disability that impacts reading, live in a low-income community, or experience any other circumstances that impact their reading or listening/verbal skills, please feel free to sign up for our free book club at:

https://www.literarium.org/book-club-february

We will have more books available next month after our launch trial!
