Despite recent rainfall, 100% of Virginia remains in some level of drought. ❎💧❎

Long-term drought conditions can cause disruptions to agriculture and water usage by VA residents, as well as contribute to increased wildfire risk. To stay up to date, new maps are released every Thursday at drought.gov.

Snapping turtles 🐢 are also on the move at Potomac Science Center. This female snapper walked up from the retention pond, likely to lay eggs 🥚🥚and bumped right into our building.

Even though Mason Field Interpreter Angelina showed her turtle head necklace, the mama turtle was a bit snappy. 🐢😤

Amid hisses and jaw snaps, we safely moved her🐢 to a more secure spot where she immediately buried herself under leaf litter.

Those neck leeches commonly affect "bottom-walking" turtles like this common snapper (Chelydra serpentina). They pose little issues for turtles 🐢 unless in high numbers.
Turtles don’t typically need rescuing, but sometimes a little redirection is helpful.

Turkey vultures not only serve as nature’s cleanup crew, some of them also enjoy looking at our Potomac Science Center murals. They are a most favorite bird species here!

Turtles are on the move in Belmont Bay! 🐢🐢🐢
Baby turtles 🐢 are hatching and making their way to the ponds and the river. From May - Aug., adult female pond turtles move up from the ponds seeking sunny, elevated areas with loose soil, sand or mulch to lay their eggs.

If you find a pond turtle in your yard, the best thing to do is just watch them. They may think your mulch bed is a safe space to lay eggs. After digging a depression and laying eggs 🥚 she will return to the pond of river.
These turtles 🐢 do not need to be ‘rescued’ unless they’re crossing a road.
If you see a turtle in the road, move them 🐢along in the direction that they are walking.
Enjoy prime turtle-watching season 🐢🐢
