HVO, R99, e-diesel, methanol—these are just a few alternative fuel options on the market. It can feel overwhelming for the vessel operation looking to pivot to a new fuel.

We got you.

In this month’s Foghorn, Tim Peters from Rolls-Royce Solutions America looks at the benefits and trade-offs for several alternative fuel options. He explains how we got here, shares insights on some of the options on the market, and examines the key considerations for passenger vessel operations.

A battery is not a generator replacement.

The title sums it up for this article in the latest issue of Foghorn. As operators consider batteries in a shift away from diesel power, they also need to shift their thinking about this component. It’s not a one-to-one replacement for gensets.

Having a better understanding of batteries and battery management systems can help operators make an informed decision so that they get the right option for their vessel and make the transition a success.

Foghorn is live and packed with news and information about the latest happenings in the passenger vessel industry.

This month takes a deep dive into marine propulsion with a look at alternative fuel options, shoreside charging, and adopting a new perspective when considering a shift to battery systems. The U.S. Committee on the Marine Transportation System also shares insights on initiatives they’ve developed to help grow the maritime workforce.

Operations across the country are expanding. New vessels have joined fleets from Seattle to New York City, and the PVA staff welcomed a new team member to better serve our members. Several shipyards were recognized for their safety achievements, steamboats raced up the Ohio River, and a new ferry service is making headway to get up and running in Florida.

Two illegal charters were recently terminated by the U.S. Coast Guard in Florida.

The Coast Guard is working to keep the waters safe by shutting down unlawful passenger-for-hire operations. These operations pose a serious threat to the public, as well as have a negative economic impact on lawful, properly certified companies.

Not familiar with the term illegal charter? These operations do not employee credentialed mariners, do not to implement mandatory drug-testing programs, may not have the proper number of life vests available, and fail to meet other crucial safety standards.

Before you step on board a vessel, ask to see a Coast Guard-issued certificate of inspection, or if they conform to Uninspected Passenger Vessel regulations. If the operator cannot produce the appropriate credentials, don’t get on board.

Read the Coast Guard press releases below for details.

It was a sunny summer morning when a call came in that there was a person in the Chicago River in distress. The crew aboard a Shoreline Sightseeing vessel heard the call and responded immediately.

The crew’s dedication to safety training and emergency response drills meant they could act with precision, speed, and calmness in a crisis. Led by Captain Erin Daigle, the team rescued the man, brought him on board, and coordinated with land-based first responders to save his life.

Over the course of 100 years of ferrying guests to barrier islands off the coast of Mississippi, Louis Skrmetta’s family has seen many things come and go—including one of the barrier islands. With a deep appreciation for the islands, Ship Island Excursions, the family operation, is doing all they can to protect these fragile ecosystems.

The team works closely with the National Park Service to encourage best practices among guests to make sure Ship Island is here for many generations to come.

In the latest issue of Foghorn, read about the operation’s 100-year history and the ways they are striving to protect this special island.

Battery technology, electric drivetrains, and novel vessel architecture are evolving in ways that are allowing operators to consider new service models, not just new vessels. David Tyler of Artemis Technologies takes a deep dive into electrification, comparing propulsion technologies and battery types, and which technologies best fit different route types.

May is all about mariners!

The first week of the month was Public Service Recognition Week, recognizing the incredible work of our members serving in the public sector. Today is National Maritime Day, honoring the people that keep the maritime system running.

Across federal, state, county, and local government, our members are on the front lines—supporting communities, solving challenges, and keeping operations running every day. Your dedication, expertise, and commitment to service make a lasting impact, often in ways that go unseen but never unappreciated.

To our members in public service and mariners everywhere: thank you for all you do to strengthen and support the communities you serve. We're honored to have you as part of our association.
