APRIL CANCER AWARENESS

This month, I’m focusing on three cancers that don’t always get the attention they deserve: Testicular, Esophageal, and Head & Neck.

Each one affects thousands of people every year but too often, the signs are missed, misunderstood, or found too late. That’s why awareness matters.

Behind every number is someone’s son, daughter, parent, or friend. These are real lives. Real families. Real futures on the line.

Take a minute to read, share, and talk about it. Because the more we know, the more lives we can help save.

Together, we fight. Together, we heal.

Walking With Strength: A First Step in the Healing Journey

Today marks a profound moment, the first day of chemotherapy. It’s not just about sitting in a chair for four to five hours while medication flows through the IV; it’s about stepping into the unknown with courage, faith, and resilience.

There’s so much that can’t be put into words: the mix of emotions, the quiet fears, and the profound hope that this treatment brings healing. Today is not just a medical process; it’s an act of bravery, a fight that takes unimaginable strength. And she is not alone.

Through every moment of discomfort, every hour that passes, and every drop of medicine doing its work, there is love surrounding her, hands holding hers in spirit, and prayers lifting her higher.

To those who have walked this path, you understand the weight of this day. To those who stand by her side, your support is a light in this journey. And to her, you are loved, you are strong, and you are never alone. One step, one breath, one moment at a time, we are with you.

A Tribute to Strength, Love, and Resilience

Today, I wear these ribbons in honor of myself and my sister. Each ribbon is more than just a symbol. It represents the battles we have fought, the challenges we have faced, and the strength we have carried through it all.

Pink for Breast Cancer – A fight that tested us but never broke us.

Teal for Cervical Cancer – A reminder of the courage it takes to keep moving forward.

Peach for Endometrial Cancer - A symbol of perseverance and unwavering hope.

Cancer changes everything: your body, your mind, and your heart. But through the pain, it also reveals the incredible power of resilience and love. This journey has been more than survival; it’s been about standing together, lifting each other, and advocating for those who continue to fight.

To all the warriors, survivors, and loved ones we’ve lost, you are never forgotten. Your strength, your fight, and your story matter.

💖💙🧡 I wear these in honor of myself and my sister. We are warriors and survivors, and we will always stand together.

Are Cancer Survival Rates Really Improving? The Untold Truth

We often hear that “more people are surviving cancer”—but is that the full story?

Yes, advancements in medicine have helped more people beat cancer, but what happens after? Many survivors later die from the long-term side effects of treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, yet those deaths are rarely counted as part of the cancer statistics.

The Reality Behind Cancer Survival

🚨 Surviving cancer doesn’t always mean surviving treatment.
🚨 Many “cancer survivors” later die from the lasting effects of chemo and radiation.
🚨 Medical tracking of survivors is inconsistent, leaving many untreated for late-onset complications.

What Are the Long-Term Side Effects?

💔 Heart failure – caused by chemo drugs like doxorubicin
🫁 Lung damage – from radiation treatment
🩸 Secondary cancers – radiation can cause leukemia or lung cancer years later
🧠 Cognitive decline – also known as “chemo brain”
⚡ Nerve damage – leading to lifelong pain and mobility issues

Are Cancer Survivors Really Being Monitored?

Not consistently. While some research groups track survivors, most cancer patients are not followed long-term—which means many later deaths caused by treatment go uncounted in survival statistics. If a survivor dies of heart failure 10 years later due to chemo, their death is not linked back to cancer.

So, are more people really surviving cancer? Or are we just not counting the long-term damage?

💡 It’s time for a new conversation. Cancer treatment isn’t just about survival—it’s about ensuring survivors truly live long, healthy lives.

What do you think? Have you or someone you know experienced long-term side effects from cancer treatment? Let’s talk.

Cancer Deaths in 2024 & 2025: A Growing Concern

Cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and the numbers for 2024 and 2025 highlight the urgent need for awareness, early detection, and improved treatments.

Global Impact 🌍
• In 2022, an estimated 9.7 million people died from cancer.
• By 2050, new cancer cases are expected to reach 35 million annually, indicating a likely increase in cancer-related deaths.

United States Cancer Death Projections 🇺🇸

2024:
• 611,720 deaths projected.
• 2,001,140 new cancer cases expected.

2025:
• 618,120 cancer-related deaths projected.
• The four leading causes of cancer deaths in the U.S. are:
🫁 Lung & Bronchus Cancer – 125,070 deaths (20%)
🦠 Colon & Re**um Cancer – 53,050 deaths (9%)
🩸 Pancreatic Cancer – 51,700 deaths (8%)
🎗 Breast Cancer – 42,680 deaths (7%)

These four cancers alone will account for nearly 44% of all cancer deaths in the U.S. this year.

Global Cancer Mortality Trends 🌎

In 2020, cancer was responsible for nearly 10 million deaths worldwide, with:
• Lung Cancer: 1.80 million deaths (18%)
• Colon & Re**um Cancer: 916,000 deaths (9%)
• Liver Cancer: 830,000 deaths (8%)
• Stomach Cancer: 769,000 deaths (8%)
• Breast Cancer: 685,000 deaths (7%)

What Does This Mean?

The rising numbers highlight the urgent need for increased awareness, early detection, and advancements in treatment. Cancer affects millions of lives, and while research is making strides, we must continue to push for better prevention, funding, and support for those battling this disease.

💡 What can we do?
✔ Get regular screenings.
✔ Support cancer research & funding.
✔ Promote healthy lifestyle choices.
✔ Advocate for better healthcare policies.

Let’s work together to turn these numbers around. How has cancer impacted your life? Share your thoughts below.

Do You Have Dense Breasts? Here’s What You Need to Know!

Did you know that dense breast tissue can make it harder for mammograms to detect cancer? In March 2023, the FDA began requiring mammography facilities to notify women about their breast density but what happens next?

For some women, doctors may recommend supplemental screenings like ultrasound or MRI to improve cancer detection. However, insurance coverage for these additional screenings varies by state and plan. While the Affordable Care Act (ACA) covers screening mammograms, not all states require coverage for extra testing.

✅ States like Connecticut, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas have laws requiring insurance to cover some or all supplemental screenings.

❌ In other states, women may have to pay out-of-pocket, with ultrasound costing around $250 and MRI around $1,084.

There is ongoing advocacy to change this, including the Find It Early Act, a bill introduced in Congress to expand insurance coverage for additional screenings for women with dense breasts.

What Can You Do?
✔ Talk to your doctor about your breast density and screening options.

✔ Contact your insurance provider to ask about coverage.

✔ Support legislation and advocacy efforts for broader insurance coverage.

Early detection saves lives! Let’s work together to ensure all women have access to the screenings they need. 💖
