Earlier this week Senators Hashmi, Bagby and Aird as well as Delegates Gardner, Jones, McQuinn, Carr, Cousins, and Willett issued a joint statement expressing their opposition to the Dominion gas plant.

Add your name here in opposition to the Dominion gas plant and sign the petition below!

About the plant:
Dominion Energy is trying to walk back their promise on clean air and climate by building a large methane gas plant in already overburdened Chesterfield County Virginia. The $500 million proposed power plant is a clear violation of Dominion's promise to focus towards renewable energy sources and to comply with the Virginia Clean Economy Act of 2019. If approved, the location of this power plant would be in the heart of the African-American community. Worse still, according to the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club the plant will run on noxious fuel oil shipped down the James River, spewing black clouds of toxic air pollutants just one mile from an elementary school, leaving both children and African-Americans disproportionately impacted by this plant.

Dominion is asking Virginians to pay for this unnecessary source of energy with their health.

This Saturday, we are going for a walk with our friends at Bull Run Unitarian Universalist and we hope you can join us!

The mayor of Manassas, Michelle Davis-Younger, has invited everyone to walk with her on Saturday mornings from Osbourn High School to the Farmers Market, from 8:30-9:30am.

Everyone who cares about sustainability is encouraged to walk with the mayor this Saturday. (Wear something green, if you can.)
Why cheerlead sustainability in Manassas now?

Manassas city staff are developing a sustainability plan. It will address climate change and propose how Manassas can cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030, citywide.

Reducing emissions to 50% of the 2005 level by 2030 (eight years from now; the clock is ticking...) is a commitment made by Manassas and the other 23 jurisdictions in the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in 2020.

Manassas staff are being wonderfully proactive... but they're staff. They needs champions on City Council to support their effort. Elected officials can adopt policies and budgets to implement the sustainability plan. Greening up Manassas can save $$$ in the long run, but requires an upfront investment to insulate buildings, install LED lights, buy electric vehicles, create a bike/pedestrian network for making short trips without firing up a car, etc. Without City Council support, the plan will just gather dust on the shelf...

Hope to see you there!

NOTE: there will be a Bike Exploration Month tent at the Farmer's Market - see details And wait, there's more! The Manassas Viking Festival starts at 10:00am at the museum/Harris Pavilion.
