🐢 ❤️ Happy World Turtle Day! Good reminder to keep an eye out for our turtle friends, especially with all the much-needed rain that is coming down. If you see one on the road, slow down and help it across when it is safe to do so. And always move them in the direction they are headed!

⚠️ ‼️ Battling invasive pests? We hear you and thank you for your effort. BUT, if you’re using sticky tape or traps, please consider safer options or covers that don’t trap our precious wildlife.

Huge thank you to all the groups helping the animals that get caught up in the danger.

A-ma-zing! A huge shout out to the talented Colgan High School National Art Honor Society students who painted portraits of shelter pets and wildlife. Several years ago, we coordinated a similar project that provided the artwork that has been on the walls at the Prince William County Animal Services Bureau's Animal Services Center. We're thrilled to do it again and absolutely LOVE the outcome. These new works of art will add to what is at the Center and expand to showcase wildlife from AERO Animal Education and Rescue Organization. Great work, students! And thank you to the teachers and advisors who helped in coordinating the project.

🐾♥️ April is National Heartworm Awareness Month! Did you know that a single bite from an infected mosquito can cause heartworm disease in dogs, cats, and other animals?

🛡️ Protect your pets with heartworm preventive on a regular schedule.

🫗Eliminate stagnant water sources on your property.

❌ Don’t spray your yard for mosquitoes – it is only 10% effective on adult mosquitoes and ends up killing beneficial insects. Pesticides also cause an increase in pet cancers, so it isn’t a good option for families with pets or children. Instead, take the Mosquito 'Bucket of Doom' Challenge to ward off the nasty pests. 🌻Spring is here. It's Catio Time!

Last year, the Prince William SPCA sponsored a give-away to promote keeping cats indoors. We had so many entries that we expanded the winner list from 3 to 9, one in each of the three size categories. Why did we do this? Catios not only keep cats safe, but also decrease the negative impact outdoor cats can have on wildlife. The catios were awarded to 9 families in Prince William County, Manassas Park, and Manassas City. More on the program, including quotes from the winners, see the link in the comments.

We are excited to share some of the photos from the winners. Thank you to Habitat Haven for all of their help in getting the catios just right for our winners! 🐾

Why cats need a catio?
▶️ Safety: Catios provide a secure space for cats to explore the outdoors while keeping them and other animals safe. They reduce the risk of accidents and injuries while keeping predators from harming your cats. Cats can enjoy the sights and sounds of their surroundings, enhancing their natural behaviors.

▶️ Enrichment and Exercise: Catios encourage physical activity, helping to prevent obesity and related health issues. Being outdoors encourages cats to explore and experience surroundings beyond the indoors. These experiences improve their mental well-being.

🐦🦊🦋 Wildlife Protection: Free-roaming cats are responsible for killing millions of birds, mammals, and reptiles every year. The most significant benefit of a Catio is that it protects birds and other wildlife by encouraging your cat to watch birds rather than hunt them. This is a win-win for cats and wildlife!

🐢 🚨 It’s that time of year to keep an eye out for our lovely turtle friends. Help them cross the street (when it is safe) and be sure to move them in the direction they are heading.

Watch out for Box Turtles on the move!

Vehicle collisions remain one of the leading causes of admission at the Wildlife Center, affecting species like the Eastern Box Turtle. In recent weeks, staff have noted an increase in turtles crossing roadways, making this an important time for drivers to stay alert.

If you encounter a turtle on the road and can safely assist, move it in the direction it was already heading. This helps the animal continue its natural movement pattern.

If you find an injured turtle, place it in a secure box and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian as soon as possible. Be sure to note the exact rescue location so the turtle can be returned to its home range after treatment.
