Meet TCS New York City Marathon runners, sibling duo Lauren and Sam Costa!

Having run together for 15 years, the duo recently teamed up for their first 26.2 miles at the historic 2024 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. With a shared background as active participants in Penn State’s THON — the largest student-run philanthropy supporting pediatric cancer families — they saw the perfect opportunity to continue their mission by joining .

Now, Lauren and Sam are ready to lace up and take on the five boroughs together!

"When we discovered TKC as an NYC Marathon charity partner, we knew it was a perfect fit," shared the siblings. "We are thrilled at the opportunity to continue
these two passions together, and to help kids and their families fight this battle."

Celebrating 10 years of Tackle Kids Cancer and Hackensack Meridian Health with an unforgettable game day! 💙🎉

Our Kaylee, Aiden, Christian and Darius, along with their families, had the ultimate VIP experience with the New York Giants. From taking in pre-game warm-ups on the field to helping with the flag during the National Anthem, the smiles didn’t stop as they cheered on the team from a suite!

A special shoutout to Aiden for joining HMH CEO Bob Garrett for the coin toss ceremony! To top it all off, a surprise meeting with Legend Justin Tuck.

Meet Marathon runner, Haneen Hussein, DO, MS!

As a family medicine physician at JFK University Medical Center, Haneen has seen firsthand the incredible resilience of patients and their families navigating pediatric cancer diagnoses. Wanting to combine her passions for humanitarianism, medicine, and running, she saw the perfect opportunity to make a difference — joining the Tackle Kids Cancer TCS New York City Marathon team.

Haneen’s career in healthcare has given her a firsthand perspective on the urgent need for better treatment options, highlighting why additional support is so critical for pediatric cancer research to help save children's lives.

“Running for gives me the opportunity to stand behind a mission that’s making a real difference in the lives of kids who deserve to just be kids again,” said Haneen.

Meet Tosh! At 17, Tosh was a high school senior focused on finishing the soccer season. But when severe pain led him to urgent care, his life changed. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"I was always optimistic,” he said. “I didn’t feel completely hopeless because I had the best care every single day.” That care came from the team at Hackensack Meridian K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, who became his second family. "What got me through was my faith in God and the supportive team who cared for me," he shared.

Tosh's treatment took place during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the compassion of his care team helped combat the isolation. He held on to his goal: getting back to his active life and sports.

Today, at 22, Tosh is thriving. He is five years cancer-free, a 2025 college graduate, and recently celebrated a beautiful wedding to his wife, Julia.

In a powerful reminder of the bonds he formed, his doctor and nurse practitioner were there to celebrate with him. "They were there for me at my darkest hour,” Tosh said. “Having them there on one of the happiest days of my life meant everything.”

Looking back, Tosh says, “cancer made me stronger.” His story is a testament to resilience and the life-changing impact of programs like Tackle Kids Cancer.

Meet Marathon runner, Taylor D’Anna!

As a lifelong New Yorker, running the NYC Marathon has always been a dream for Taylor. Working as a pediatric dietitian at Hackensack University Medical Center for the past nine years, Taylor saw the perfect opportunity to make this milestone even more meaningful — joining the TCS New York City Marathon team to make a difference for our most valiant patients.

"Every year I watched the runners take on the five boroughs and have been endlessly inspired by their dedication and perseverance to cross the finish line. I have had the privilege of supporting children and their families and have seen firsthand the challenges they endure," said Taylor.

"While childhood cancer research remains historically underfunded, Team TKC helps provide critical funding for research that can improve outcomes for kids and their families. I am so excited to share this memory with my own four children and show them what chasing your dreams and giving your all looks like!"

Let’s hear it for Luciana! Luciana was diagnosed with Wilms tumor at 6 years old and after a hard-fought, four-year journey, she just rang the bell for the third time!

Luciana's journey had a lot of ups and downs, but her resilience and bravery shone through each and every day. After three courses of treatment, including an autologous bone marrow transplant, Luciana celebrated alongside her family, friends and members of her care team.

Now that treatment is complete, 10-year-old Luciana is enjoying getting back to all the things she loves. We are so proud to see Luciana returning to cheerleading and getting ready to go back to school in person this fall!

These are the precious moments we are able to give back to our TKC MVPs, especially with the support of donors like you.
