In our recently released Micro Highlight, 2021 National Medicare Extract for Pathologists, we discuss new insights for 2023 on significant differences in Medicare reimbursements throughout the country, as seen in the two most widely used CPT codes: 88305 and 88307.

In 2021, Medicare disbursed approximately $1.5 billion for pathology services featuring a professional component. While the facility place of service contributes significantly to 45% of total wRVUs, it only accounts for 31% of total reimbursements. This discrepancy can be attributed to the prevalence of professional component-only services, with higher global payments predominantly falling within the Non-Facility category.
