Thanks to everyone that came out for monarch tagging. This was the last Family Nature Club program for the year. I’ll update any programs after the first of the year!

MONARCH BUTTERFLY TAGGING IS ON! I’m watching the radar and it’s looking like any significant rainfall will be done by about noon. Join me at Schaben Park at 2 pm to tag and release 2 pre-caught monarchs (1 is a boy & 1 a girl-come to find out how we tell them apart!). Plus we’ll catch and tag more for their migration to Mexico!

Don't miss monarch butterfly catching and tagging Sunday, September 12th, 2 p.m. at Schaben Park near Dunlap! We'll catch and tag (put a sticker on their wing) monarchs that are starting their migration south to Mexico. This provides valuable data for scientists to learn more about the butterfly and their migration! Meet at the large shelter-nets, tags, and bug spray supplied. This is a Family Nature Club event, so participants will get a free activity pack to take home. This will be the last FNC event of 2021 due to the construction of the new Willow Lake Nature Center and planning for the exhibits. Please share!

FAMILY NATURE CLUB: Next program: Kayaking and fishing; Tuesday, July 20th, 6-8 p.m. at Willow Lake. Rain date: Thursday, July 22nd, same time.
Bring the family out for an evening of kayaking and fishing-bring a picnic lunch before to eat in the shelter if you want. Kayaks, paddles, and life jackets provided-suggested children are 12 years old or big enough to operate kayak on their own. Fishing poles and bait provided.
No cost, however, registration is REQUIRED by Friday, July 16th-not enough registrations will mean the program is cancelled. Call HCCB at 712-647-2785 ext. 22 for Naturalist Connie Betts.

It's looking a little rainy for our first Family Nature Club program this Saturday, but we're still going to hold it. Meet 9 a.m. at the shelter at Schaben Park-bring a cut walking stick for each child to decorate. I'll have FNC activity packs to hand out plus information on morel and other edible mushrooms. We'll look for mushrooms as long as the weather cooperates!

Who hoo spring is getting closer! We hope to have quite a few activities this year and want to get the Family Nature Club up and running again.

First of all, every family/household that comes to FNC and other HCCB programs this year, will get a FREE activity pack full of fun things to do as a family at home or a park. I'll have those (pictured below) to hand out at our first program in May.

Our first program will be Saturday, May 15th, 9 a.m. at Schaben Park near Dunlap. We'll decorate walking sticks (bring a freshly cut stick for each child-dead ones will just break) and we'll add yarn, beads, ribbons, colored feathers and more-all materials supplied. Then we'll hit the trails looking for morel mushrooms, talking about identification, and hopefully find other mushrooms like pheasant backs. Meet at the shelter. If it rains hard or there is severe weather, we'll try to move the program to the afternoon.

Other programs I'm thinking of are Fishing & Kayaking at Willow Lake some weekday evening in July and Monarch Butterfly Tagging Blitz on Sunday, September 12th with time and location TBA.

While HCCB's Family Nature Club was sidelined by COVID in 2020, just like everything else, I'm thinking of programs and activities for 2021! Until then, I wish you and your family a very happy and safe Thanksgiving!
