Every year, nearly 17,900 people in the U.S. join the SCI community — bringing the total to an estimated 294,000 Americans living with spinal cord injuries today. Yet public understanding hasn't kept pace with those numbers, and misconceptions about what life with SCI looks like still persist.

InSpirit continues to use our platforms to change that. Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month is about more than education — it's a push for better accessibility, stronger healthcare coverage, continued research funding, and policies that support independence. It's also a celebration: of the researchers advancing rehabilitation and assistive technology, and of the resilience we see every day in the people we serve.

Living with a spinal cord injury doesn't define what someone can achieve. On this site and others, we regularly share stories, facts, and resources to help build a more informed, more inclusive community. Please share our posts and help us spread the word.

On September 26th, the Elks Lodge in San Rafael goes back in time — think jazz, the Charleston, and a little bit of glamour.

Jeff Labes takes the stage for a night of live music, alongside a costume contest and live auction that bring out the best kind of competitive spirit. But really, it's about the room: good people, good energy, good food, all in one place for one night.

Because independent living matters.

For people with quadriplegia, staying in their own home instead of a facility often comes down to having the right support in place. That's what the night is for — and why every seat in the room counts. We hope you will join us.

As of April 1, 2025, the income limit for a single applicant is $1,836/month, and for a married couple, $2,490/month. Asset limits also apply; for an individual that number is $130,000.

That $1,836/month cap equals $22,025 a year — keeping disabled Californians trapped below the poverty line just to access the care they need. This is the reality of the system that our recipients have to operate within.

That’s why we need your help. InSpirit helps our selected recipients affected by quadriplegia who find it difficult to make ends meet by raising funds so that they can augment the costs of their attendant care. Empowering our recipients helps them live in their own homes and prevent institutionalization so that they live longer and enjoy much more fulfilling lives.�
