STEM Camp 2026 – Final Day

What an incredible way to wrap up our Raptors STEM Camp!

Yesterday, campers explored the science of raptor flight, discovered what owls eat by dissecting owl pellets, and had some very special visitors fly in from the Edgerton Explorit Center in Aurora.

Earlier in the day, each camp team shared what they had learned about their raptor species. One of the highlights of the day came when Deb introduced campers to real birds of prey, including most of the species they had been studying all week. It was an unforgettable experience!

We finished the day with our STEM Expo, where campers showcased their learning to family and friends. Visitors also had fun exploring Edgerton's Traveling Explorit Zone.

🦅 STEM Camp Day 2! 🦅

Today our campers learned all about raptor talons and beaks. One of our biggest takeaways was that talons are like forks and beaks are like knives when it comes to how raptors catch and kill their prey!

Our campers tested their raptor knowledge by matching talons to different birds of prey by considering the weight of the animals they hunt and the height of the Raptor. We also put our own "talons" and "beaks" to the test by using a variety of tools to pick up objects of different shapes and sizes.

We spent part of the afternoon learning about common Midwest backyard birds, listening to bird songs, and going birding at Library Park with our journals. Camp ended with a fun engineering challenge as campers built nests designed to protect their raptor eggs.

We also took time to celebrate Harlow's 10th birthday, Eagle style! 🦅

Tomorrow is our FINAL day of STEM Camp, and our campers are in for a special surprise.

Join Stick Creek Kids and Wood River Rural Schools for a FREE STEM Expo this Wednesday, June 17, from 5:30–7:00 p.m. at the Wood River Community Center!

SCK STEM Camp Day 1 was a soaring success! 🦅
Today, our campers kicked off the week by diving into the world of raptors! We explored some of the adaptations that help birds of prey survive and hunt, focusing on their vision and hearing.

2026 Teams:
Barred Owls
Kestrel Falcons
Red-Shouldered Hawks
Golden Eagles

One of the highlights of the day was a game where our "raptor" had to use its hearing to detect prey sneaking closer, just like these birds do in the wild! We also discovered how binocular vision helps raptors accurately spot and capture their prey.

We have a BIG group this year with our Stick Creek Kids Eagles, Wood River Elementary Summer School ASP students, and the 20+ extra students who signed up to attend. We had adult helpers from Stick Creek Kids/Wood River Elementary, volunteer Pat Lammers, and a couple of junior high and high school volunteers!

We can’t wait for Day 2, when campers will investigate two more amazing adaptations: powerful beaks and sharp talons!
