Monday night, March 30, an overflow audience crowded into the Conway Public Library reading room to hear speakers supporting the federal Roadless Rule, which has protected 45 million acres across the US from most roadbuilding, development and extractive use for the past 25 years. While the rule was formulated after 600 official public meetings, no such meetings are planned to address the proposal to rescind it.

The most useful takeaways are things each of us can do to help protect the Roadless Rule:

· Speak to friends and neighbors who may not be aware of this developing threat

· Call and write our Congressional delegations in opposition to the rescission and in favor of passage of the Roadless Area Conservation Act (bit.ly/NE-Roadless)

· Call Governor Ayotte’s office (603-271-7676) and ask her to advocate for protection of National Forest lands, which are a core recreational and economic resource for her state and to support state legislation that can assure protection.

· Stay tuned to submit official comments in support of the Roadless Rule, expected mid-late April – we will let you know. Millions of comments will have an effect!

The meeting was organized by the Sierra Club NH, National Parks Conservation Association and Standing Trees.

READING the WILD:
On Friday February 20 we had the perfect combination: lots of snow, eagers kids and a great teacher. Kyle Ball of New England Wildlife Tracking led a group of intrepid young explorers in search of animal footprints. Using the snow as a whiteboard Kyle drew tracks to show how animals with hooves make tracks that look very different from animals with paws.

The trackers found the prints of moose, snowshoe hare, southern flying squirrel and red fox and also s**t of coyote and moose. In evidence that spring is really approaching tracks from two moose led right to an apple tree where tender shoots had been nibbled away.
Big thanks to
the Tamworth Recreation Department and New England Wildlife tracking for joining us in organizing adventure. You can find them here:

We look forward to more programs for all ages in the coming months -- ideas and partners welcome!

Skywatch has been rescheduled. Due to cloudy skies we have rescheduled this event until February 14. Cross your fingers for good weather. The astronomers who will be bringing their telescopes have so much to show us.

The good news is that according to astronomer Joe Dechene, February 14 is another good moment astronomically. One of Jupiter's moons, Io, will emerge from Jupiter's shadow around 18:58. Jupiter will also have its Great Red Spot (GRS) rotating into view. What, you may ask, is Jupiter's Great Red Spot? It's a swirling anticyclonic storm feature larger than Earth!

Shout out to CANFIELD LANDSCAPING & FORESTRY of Sandwich!
Besides keeping our trails in tip-top shape, the WODC attends to lesser amenities that can also make any hike more enjoyable. Our unique and beautiful map is one. The serenely situated Ferncroft parking lot is another. Less glamorous, but sometimes quite important, is the Ferncroft port-a-potty.
Last Friday we were in a real pickle: the temperature had dropped to around 2 degrees and a hefty snowfall was predicted. But the potty had not yet been moved. We had to get it to a new location to make sure there would be access for winter servicing. Who would do this job on such short notice?
Tom Canfield to the rescue! We explained our predicament. And After a full day working outdoors Tom talked his sons into it: “I’ll be there in 20 minutes.” That potty was down in dip and wasn’t easy to move. But Canfield came well equipped with ropes, a truck and determination. Tom and his sons Josh and Dan got the job done.
After thanking Tom, I handed him a card with details to bill us and started walking home. A little way down the road Tom’s truck caught up with me. He rolled down the window and said, “You know, we hike and ski here all year. We appreciate how well you keep the trails. We won’t be sending you a bill.” Now that’s community spirit! Great thanks for a great job to Tom, Dan and Josh of Canfield Landscaping & Forestry. Canfieldlandscaping.net

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our longtime member and friend Jack Waldron. Jack’s association with the WODC began as a hiker and culminated in taking on the presidency for 20 some years, during which time he recruited new officers and envisioned and carried through an impressive breadth of projects. True to Jack’s vision, he handed off the president’s responsibilities in August of this year. We are immeasurably grateful for the strength of the organization he left.
We will celebrate Jack’s life in the summer in the Wonalancet Chapel Grove. In this moment we are sharing his obituary:

John Kevin (Jack) Waldron, passed away on November 17, 2025, at Golden View Health Care Center in Meredith, NH, from the effects of prostate cancer. Although prostate cancer did bring an end to his life, Jack enjoyed and profited from those six years: he grew grateful in all ways, especially to learn about himself, learn about others, and learn about prostate cancer.

Jack was born November 18, 1946, in Boston, MA, to John and Mary Waldron. He was educated in the Boston public and parochial schools, where, by the time he graduated, he had studied six years of Latin and five years of Greek. He then matriculated at the College of the Holy Cross, graduating with a BA in modern languages. It was the Viet Nam era, a complicated time for a young man. He was drafted twice, though eventually deferred, and he spent three years working in the medical laboratory field, as he had done part-time during college. After this time of turbulence and uncertainty, he pursued further studies at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he achieved 70% of the credits required for his Master’s degree in the even newer languages of computer science, before realizing he was already sufficiently gainfully employed and didn’t need the degree!

Jack worked for 25 years as a software engineer for a number of companies throughout eastern Massachusetts, thoroughly enjoying the work, and was able, at the age of fifty-three, to retire comfortably. Then he decided to pursue full-time something else that really appealed to him: in his forties, he had become an avid hiker, and became deeply involved with various hiking organizations, most notably the Wonalancet Out Door Club, for which he eventually served as president for twenty years. During those years, the WODC concentrated on making the trails as sustainable as possible and approximately $380,000 was spent from grant money to achieve this goal. He found this to be some of the most satisfying work in his life.

He had a life-long interest in education, and appreciated its value, which had been cultivated early and at home, and which had so successfully molded his life. He had a great desire to pass this on to others, and pursued a seat on the Tamworth School Board. He was elected, and served for fifteen years, twelve of them as Chair. Although Jack was not a professional educator, he tried to provide leadership in the school district by bringing everyone onto the same page – Board, administrators, staff, students, parents, and taxpayers. This provided quite a challenge, which he relished over those fifteen years.

He leaves behind his close friend Jennifer Hocking Wiley, whom he thought of more as a sister than a friend; his close friend Kathi Padgett, who also served with him on the school board; his dear friend Mark Albee, of whom he said: “I don’t have a religious bone in my body, but Mark … Mark is my pastor; ” his brothers Tom (Cathy), Michael, and sisters Patricia Waldron (Bill), Eileen Hanafin (Bill), and Frances (Michael). He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Mary Ann Staudter (Dale), and their son, Danny.

In lieu of flowers, Jack encourages a gift to the Waterman Fund of VT or another hiking organization. There will be a memorial service next summer in the grove of the Wonalancet Union Chapel in Wonalancet, NH. Stay tuned for details.
