With the Fall weather and the Sun shining down on Shikkelamy’s face this Sunday would be a lovely time to stop by the Homestead from noon to 4 pm for our next to last 2026 event.
Before you could just look into the cabin from window or door but Sunday you will be able to come inside and view the cabin from the inside and talk with the men of the Berks County Militia as well as Open hearth cooking in the Springhouse, fall park walk at 2 pm and a great display of Rev War gear by Irv Snavely. Time is running down on our open days left. Enjoy the museum bookstore and Redware consignment pieces. We hope to see you Sunday!

Living History Sunday, October 18, 2026, at 12 pm!

After a 2-year restoration of our park log cabin by PHMC, we can say....... it is finished and you can see for yourself the restored area and come in side and see the interior with furniture!!!!!!!!!

Friends, it has been a long time coming but, on this day, we will be having our restored log cabin open to the public for the first time! Please come and join us as the Berk County Militia occupies the cabin. But that is not all.

We will be having open hearth cooking in the spring house, a great display by German Regiment soldier, Irv Snavely, and our annual Fall Park Walk by Friend’s President David Sonnen.

The site will be open from noon to 4 pm with the Fall Park Walk starting at 2 pm
gathering at the Visitors Center.
Please come and share the fall weather, learn history and shop in our museum
store. Guided tours available. We hope to see you then.

On September 23, 1742, the ship Georgia Packet landed in Charleston, South Carolina, carrying the German native and Lutheran pastor Henry Melchior Muhlenberg. He would spend the rest of his life in America formally organizing the Lutheran Church, though he maintained correspondence with friends and family back in Germany, as well as his mentors at the Francke Foundations in Halle.

We don’t know exactly what Muhlenberg brought with him on his journey to America, besides “necessary supplies” and some medicines. Over the next few decades, he often received more medicines, books, and other supplies from his benefactors abroad. His glass mug, pictured below, is thought to be of German origin. The silver lid on top is engraved with floral decoration and Muhlenberg's initials. Perhaps he brought it with him from Europe when he emigrated in 1742, or received it from a friend abroad at a later date.

Henry Muhlenberg's glass mug is currently on loan to , along with many other objects and manuscripts from the collection of the Lutheran Archives Center. Visit Dewees Tavern now through February 2028 to see it on display as part of the exhibition Window to Revolution: Pennsylvania Germans and the War for Independence.
