On July 23, 1776, Henry Muhlenberg was still acclimatizing himself to life in the country after leaving Philadelphia, and the war effort continued to build:

“Since Sunday I have had a kind of colic, which may be due to drinking water and milk. In the city I was accustomed to covent, or small beer, which quenches my thirst best in the hot summer days; but this is not to be had so conveniently in the country until one procures the ingredients and utensils.

Again, in the evening, there arrived here a company of riflemen, or sharpshooters, from Reading on their march to Jersey to push on to the camp tomorrow. Most of them are native youngsters from in and around Reading who learned bushfighting like that of the Indians. They are also clad in Indian fashion and are armed with rifles and tomahawks. Their outer shirts are shaggy, almost like the pictures of satyrs, fauns, or sylvan spirits of ancient times.”

This excerpt is from “The Journals of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, Volume 2,” translated by Theodore G. Tappert and John W. Doberstein, 1945. This and additional volumes are available for research at Historic Trappe’s Center for Pennsylvania German Studies in the Dewees Tavern, and the original handwritten journals are preserved by the Lutheran Archives Center at Philadelphia.

Join us for a beginner's level workshop to create a Historic Theorem Painting, a beloved art form that was popular in New England during the early 1800s.
This workshop is structured to guide participants through the process of recreating an 8x10" portrait of a Distelfink bird. The Distelfink is a symbolic motif in German artistic tradition, representing good fortune and happiness within the artistic heritage of the Pennsylvania Germans.
Participants will receive detailed, step-by-step instruction on the technique of applying oil paint with brushes to a cotton velveteen fabric board using a series of pre-cut stencils to create a picture that looks hand-painted and ready to frame.
This class welcomes all skill levels, and no prior experience is required. All supplies provided.
This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Conrad Weiser Homestead
The date of this class is September 13, 2026, at the Homestead starting at 1 p.m.
Price is $50 for members and $55 for non members.
Please contact the Homestead at [email protected]
