We are building a makerspace & vocational hub open to all levels of makers: students, hobbyists, and professionals; providing a place where people have access to tools and equipment for tinkering, fixing, repairing, inventing, building, designing, producing, crafting, iterating, and innovating. Our space will include a woodshop, metal & machining shop, Fablab, and studios for fabric & fine arts, jewelry, media/technology, and workplace development.

Some conversations are easier when we make a little room for them.

On Monday, September 14, Makers Mill will provide the space for a free Death Café, facilitated by Gwyn Villa, who specializes in hospice and palliative nursing care.

Over tea and snacks, adults are invited to gather for an informal, lightly moderated conversation about death and dying. There’s no agenda, no expectation that you share anything in particular, and you don’t need to arrive with the right questions or words.

It’s not grief counseling, therapy, or a support group. Just a comfortable space to talk about something that touches all of our lives, but doesn’t always get talked about.

Fire up the torch and make something you’ll actually want to wear!

On Saturday, September 12, Deb Ryan is back in the Metalsmithing & Jewelry Studio for Torch Fired Earrings.

You’ll learn how to shape and hammer silver wire, work with an acetylene torch, solder, and turn it all into a finished pair of earrings. Make Deb’s “Sun and Rain” design, choose another example, or come up with a design of your own.

Beginners are absolutely welcome, and everyone leaves with a pair of handmade silver earrings and some new metalsmithing skills under their belt.

Fall knitting season is coming. Might as well know how!

Deb Halstead's Learn to Knit three-part series starts Wednesday at Makers Mill.

Over three weeks, beginners will have a chance to learn the basics, practice with Deb there to help, and start building the skills to keep knitting long after class is over.

A little something to look forward to next Tuesday night…

Doc Dougherty is back at Makers Mill for our Sustainability & Homesteading Club, a casual gathering for sharing ideas, experiences, questions and practical knowledge around living a little more sustainably.

It’s potluck style, and there’s usually something yummy being cooked up at the Mill before the gathering starts. Bring something to share if you’d like, pull up a chair, and join the conversation. Free and open to all!

You don’t need to have a farm or call yourself a homesteader. Curiosity counts.

Hello, September!

There’s a lot happening at Makers Mill this month, and we put it all in one place to make it a little easier to see what’s coming up.

September brings nearly 30 classes, clubs, and community events to the Mill — from sewing, knitting, leatherwork and metalsmithing to painting, stained glass, electronics, youth art, Repair Café, Games Night and more.

Some are a few hours. Some are multi-week series. Some are free. All are good reasons to come make, learn, meet people, and spend a little time at the Mill.

Treat yourself to a little creative time this Wednesday!

Join Courtney Drake for Naturescape Shadow Box and spend a few hours playing with preserved moss and natural materials to create your own piece of nature-inspired art.

The preserved moss stays green and vibrant without watering or maintenance, so you’ll leave with something that has the feel of a living landscape but can hang on your wall for years.

It’s beginner-friendly, relaxing, and a pretty great excuse to spend a Wednesday making something just for yourself. It could also be a fun hands-on art experience for a homeschooler looking to try something a little different!

A little color from around the Mill lately…

Jeanne Flanagan recently led three days of fabric dyeing classes, exploring Shades & Hues, Shibori techniques, and ice dyeing. We love seeing the space filled with experiments, works in progress, and people comparing results and learning from each other.

It’s one of the things we enjoy most about hosting classes at Makers Mill. People bring their knowledge and curiosity into the space, try something they may not have done before, and spend a few hours making alongside other people.

A big thanks to Jeanne and all of her helpers for sharing their time, skills, and enthusiasm, and to everyone who came to play with color!

A little more art in the school week sounds pretty good to us!

This September, Jennifer MacLean is leading two new 4-week Art Fundamentals series for young artists. Students will explore drawing, painting, mixed media, perspective, color theory, blending, shading and more, with each week building on the last.

There are two options:

Homeschoolers ages 6–13
Wednesdays, 12–1:30pm

Afterschool ages 8–13
Wednesdays, 4–5:30pm

Both begin September 9 and run for four Wednesdays. Class sizes are small, with just 6 spots in each series.
