For the history lovers: our board member Brett Hahn has put together the LaGrange County Gazette, a county history publication. Wolcottville shows up in it a fair bit. Check it out!

It is a county history publication: how LaGrange County was settled, named and argued over. The courthouse the county paid cash for. The seminary at Wolcottville that never opened. The ninety-one men recorded as unwilling to carry a rifle. The town that has had three names.

It comes out of two published county histories, two county atlases, a stack of fire insurance maps and whatever else survives. Every piece says where it came from. Where the sources disagree, the piece says so rather than picking one quietly.

Nothing on the site is paid for. No advertising, no sponsored anything. Corrections are published and dated.

What a night.

More than thirty of you came out to the Rome City American Legion Hall on Thursday for our first Euchre Night, and between the tournament and the raffles we raised over $1,000 for Wolcottville.

That money stays right here. Education, recreation, revitalization. That is the whole point.

Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket, filled a seat, or just came to sit and watch the cards fly. Thank you to the Rome City American Legion Offical Page for opening their doors to us. Thank you to Eileen and Denise for running check in and keeping everybody fed, and to Anna for keeping the books straight all evening.

A special thank you to Euchre Mate for sponsoring the whole thing. Brett covered the cards, the supplies, the printing, and ran the tournament from start to finish. Euchre Mate is a free online Euchre game built right here in Wolcottville, and you can play at euchremate.com.

Thank you as well to the businesses who donated raffle prizes. Your generosity is the reason nights like this work.

We were not sure what to expect from a first year event. What we got was a full room, a lot of laughing, and more than a thousand dollars for the Wolcottville Community Initiative.

Thank you everyone who came out, it was a hit!! It was so fun watching everyone laughing and having a good time! I met the nicest people, well I hope you come back and bring your friends…. We need to develop that community, I was talking about. We need friends to connect with And have someone we can call on! But maybe that’s just me! At least let’s have some fun together while we will trying to improve our town! Again thank you and hope to see you soon 💜

Bring cash for your entry and a little extra for the 50/50 and the raffle. Twenty dollars a person at the door.

Snacks will be out at the tables and the bar is open. Come hungry for cards, not for supper.

Walk ins are welcome. If you did not sign up and you want to play, come anyway. We have room, and if you show up without a partner we will find you one.

If you already registered, just come find Eileen, Denise or Brett at the check in table and they will get you squared away.

Tomorrow night is Euchre Night, and we would rather see you at a table than reading about it Friday.

Do not have a partner? Sign up anyway. We will pair you with somebody, and about half the fun of a progressive tournament is who you end up sitting across from.

Doors open at 5:00 at the Rome City American Legion Hall in Rome City. Play starts at 6:00 and wraps up around 9:00. Twenty dollars a person, cash or check at the door.

A few people have asked how the Euchre tournament works tomorrow night, so here is the short version.

We are playing Progressive Euchre. The big thing to know: nobody gets knocked out. This is not a bracket. You and your partner play cards from six o'clock until the last round ends.

Here is how a night of it goes.

You get seated at a numbered table. A round is eight hands, which is two trips around the table with everybody dealing twice. There is no score to race to. When the deal has gone around twice, the round is done.

Then everybody moves. The winning pair subtracts one from their table number. The losing pair adds one. If that table does not exist, you stay where you are. Partners stay together all night.

Here is the part folks like. Points from a round you lose still count toward your total. So even a rough round keeps you in it, and you face new people every time you move.

Highest pair total at the end takes first place. We are planning on five rounds.

One house rule, Stick the Dealer. Everything else is standard Euchre.

Never played, or have not played since you were a kid at somebody's kitchen table? Come anyway. There is a rules sheet at every table and Brett walks the whole room through it before the first hand.

Let's talk about what is on the table Thursday night.

First place pair takes home a $150 Visa gift card. Second place gets $80. Third gets $50. We will also be running a 50/50 raffle and drawing on four donated prizes from folks around town who stepped up without being asked twice.

Twenty dollars gets you in the door, a seat at the table, snacks while you play, and a bar that is open all evening.
