🚧🐔 BIG PROGRESS ON THE HENNITENTIARY! 🐔🚧

Today was another WIN here at Feeding Phoenix Farm! For what feels like the last two years, I've been getting asked, "When is the chicken coop going to be done?" Well... it's not done yet, but thanks to some incredible help today, we made HUGE strides toward making it a reality.

A big thank you goes out to Jerrod Lack from Pop-Ins of Arizona and Shaun Affeldt from Oasis Home Solutions. Together, in what probably looked more like a TV comedy skit than a serious construction project, we managed to get the forms built. Then came the real workout—mixing and pouring 58 bags of concrete into place for the foundation! I remember someone asking me about my osha footwear, 🩴 I threw one of my flip flops at that guy.

With the slab now in, we can finally move on to the fun part: 2x4s, posts, nails, and everything else needed to turn this dream into a real building. The foundation is literally set, and the next phase of construction is officially underway.

Coming soon to Wittmann, Arizona...

Thank you, Jerrod and Shaun, for donating your time, hard work, and expertise to help us move this project forward. Community support like this is what turns big dreams into reality.

🌱 What a fantastic Volunteer Day at Feeding Phoenix Farm! 🌱

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Jenette, Xander, Allison, Laura, and from The Men's Wearhouse at the Prasada location, which will be opening soon. Once those doors open, they're going to be busy helping customers look their best, so they decided to spend the morning team-building while helping us build the dream here at the farm.

The weather was absolutely beautiful—75° with a nice breeze and plenty of sunshine. Although, if we're being honest, that Arizona sun made it feel a lot closer to 95°! 😅

Together, this amazing team tackled over 1,000 square feet of w**ds throughout our future row crop area and sections of the orchard. The transformation was incredible. We filled our dumpster so full that after jumping in and smashing everything down, it's only overflowing a little bit! 😂

In addition to the serious w**d battle, we were also able to fertilize approximately half of our orchard trees. That's a bigger job than it sounds. Since our trees are surrounded by deep mulch, removing it before fertilizing would take weeks of labor. Instead, we apply the fertilizer on top of the mulch and then water it in thoroughly so the nutrients can activate and reach the roots. With no guarantee of rain anytime soon, that watering step is critical to helping these trees thrive.

The impact of today's volunteer effort will be felt for months to come. Every w**d removed means less competition for water and nutrients, and every tree fertilized is another step toward producing more fresh food for families in our community.

Now for the fun part... 💥

Laura, the District Manager, has officially thrown down a challenge to other businesses and organizations:

Can your team top what The Men's Wearhouse Prasada crew accomplished today?

Who's next?

Who accepts the challenge? 😎

Thank you,

🚧🐔 Progress is happening behind the scenes here at Feeding Phoenix Farm! 🐔🚧

We were able to round up a couple awesome volunteers to help with the Hennitentiary footer form and upcoming concrete pour, so I’ve been hard at work getting everything prepped to make the process go as smoothly as possible. The first step was cleaning out all of the footer trenches. Since they were originally dug, dirt, rocks, and even w**ds had worked their way back in, so it was time to get everything cleaned up and ready again. 🌱🪨

Now that the trenches are cleared, I’ve moved on to building the forms for the footer using 2x4s. Since I didn’t have any 16-foot boards on hand, I improvised by joining shorter boards together and sistering braces onto the outside — and waaalaaa… homemade 16 footers 😄🔨 I also cut down the 8-foot boards that will become the shorter sides of the coop structure.

Next up will be cutting and preparing the inner 2x4 forms for the footer. Slowly but surely the Hennitentiary is coming together, and every step gets us closer to creating a safer and better home for the chickens here at the farm. 🐓❤️

Thank you,

🌳 Volunteers Needed for Our Orchard Fertilizer Project! 🌳

We are looking for a few volunteers to help us complete one of the next important steps in caring for our orchard here at Feeding Phoenix Farm. We currently have 3 one-hour shifts available between now and May 29th.

This task is simple but makes a HUGE difference for the health and growth of our trees. Volunteers will help place granular fertilizer around the drip line of each tree and then water it in for about 5 minutes. That’s it! 😊

One of the best parts is that this can easily be done either standing or sitting. You can even sit in a chair, complete a tree, move to the next one, and repeat. This is one of our easier volunteer projects, but it helps tremendously by freeing me up to focus on some of the more physically demanding farm work.

If you would like to help support the farm and spend a peaceful hour outdoors helping our orchard thrive, send us a message. We would truly appreciate the extra hands! 🌱🍊

🌳 As we’re wrapping up the w**ds, I’m already looking ahead to the next phase of the orchard. We’re getting ready to plant 50 more trees, and after digging the first 50 holes by hand with shovels… let’s just say we learned a lot 😅 This time around, a mini excavator would make a huge difference — we’re talking a couple scoops per hole and on to the next instead of hours of labor.

🚜 The challenge is, we don’t have one. So we’re reaching out to our community for support — if anyone is able to donate a one-day rental, or has a mini excavator and would like to come out and help us knock out these holes, it would make a massive impact. This is a big step forward for expanding the orchard and increasing the food we can provide to those in need 💚
