The Health Wagon The Health Wagon’s mission is to provide compassionate, quality healthcare to the medically underserved people in the mountains of Appalachia.

Our organization was started 42 years ago when Sister Bernadette Kenny, a medical missionary from Massachusetts, came to Appalachia and began offering free medical care from the back of her donated Volkswagen Beetle. The locals relied on Kenny for basic medical needs- referring to her simply as ‘Sister Bernie” and the care she provided as “the Health Wagon.” Today, we proudly continue her legacy, operating from mobile units and stationary clinics throughout Southwest Virginia.

🎀💗 Breast Health Day is an important reminder to make breast health a regular part of caring for yourself. Knowing what is normal for your body, keeping up with recommended screenings, and talking with a healthcare provider about any changes can help identify potential concerns as early as possible.

“She is clothed with strength and dignity.” - Proverbs 31:25

At the Health Wagon, we are committed to helping women throughout our communities access preventive and women's healthcare. Our team can provide clinical breast exams, discuss personal and family risk factors, help patients understand screening recommendations, and assist with referrals and connections to mammograms and additional diagnostic care when needed.

Pay attention to changes such as a new lump or thickening, changes in the size or shape of the breast, ni**le changes or unexpected discharge, skin dimpling or irritation, or a new change that simply doesn't feel normal for you. While many breast changes are not cancer, they still deserve a conversation with a healthcare professional.

This Breast Health Day, take a moment to put your health on your list of priorities. Know your body. Know your risk. Keep up with your recommended care. 🎀💗

🌿💙 Wellness Wednesday is your reminder that wellness is built through the small choices you make each day. Taking care of your body, mind, and spirit doesn't require perfection. It simply requires consistency and a willingness to prioritize your health.

“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” - 3 John 1:2

At the Health Wagon, we're here to support your wellness journey through primary care, behavioral health services, dental care, vision care, preventive screenings, chronic disease management, and mobile clinics that bring healthcare closer to our communities.

Today, take a moment to invest in yourself. Drink more water, take a walk, choose a nutritious meal, get some fresh air, or schedule a checkup. Every healthy decision is a step toward a healthier tomorrow.

🥫💙 Hunger Awareness Month is a time to recognize the reality of food insecurity and its impact on health. For many families, putting nutritious food on the table can be difficult due to rising costs, limited transportation, availability of healthy options, and other challenges. No one should have to choose between groceries, medications, utilities, or other basic needs.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.” - Matthew 25:35

At the Health Wagon, we know that access to nutritious food is an important part of overall health. Food insecurity can make it harder to manage conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Our team can provide nutrition education, preventive care, chronic disease management, and connections to available community resources for individuals and families who may need additional support.

This month, we encourage everyone to help fight hunger in our Appalachian communities. Consider supporting a local food pantry, donating food or supplies, volunteering, or simply checking in on a neighbor who may be struggling. Hunger isn't always visible, and asking for help should never be a source of shame.

Together, we can help ensure more of our neighbors have the nourishment and support they need to live healthier lives. 🥫💙

🕊️💙 Stop America’s Violence Everywhere (SAVE) Today is a reminder that violence affects individuals, families, schools, workplaces, and entire communities. Preventing violence begins with awareness, compassion, education, and a willingness to recognize warning signs and help connect people with support before a crisis occurs.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” - Matthew 5:9

At the Health Wagon, we recognize that violence is also a public health issue. Experiencing or witnessing violence can have lasting effects on both physical and emotional health. Our team is committed to providing compassionate healthcare, behavioral health services, mental health screenings, and connections to additional community resources for individuals and families who may be experiencing trauma, fear, or other difficult circumstances.

Each of us can play a role in creating safer communities. Check in on those around you, take threats of violence seriously, teach children healthy ways to handle conflict, speak up when someone may be in danger, and reach out for professional help when a situation is beyond what you can safely handle.

Today, let's choose kindness over cruelty, intervention over silence, and compassion over indifference. Safer communities begin when we look out for one another. 🕊️💙
