Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.

Reassurance is not about dependence.

It is about giving a person repeated felt experiences of consistency where there once was unpredictability.

Many children are not “misbehaving” - they are overwhelmed.

Bright lights. Loud noises. Busy classrooms. Too many instructions at once. Even a change in routine can push a child’s nervous system into overload.

Sensory overload can look like meltdowns, anger, shutting down, crying, covering ears, refusing school, or “rude” behaviour. But often, it is a child trying to cope with more than their brain and body can handle.

When adults understand what sensory overload really looks like, children are more likely to get support instead of punishment.

Every parent, teacher, social worker, foster carer, and professional working with children needs to understand this.
