The Viking Longships Project is a class at Winthrop High School, which over the years has created a community devoted former students and has earned the respect of prominent members of the community in and around the town of Winthrop, MA. Through grants and the tireless efforts of hundreds of students over the course of three decades, Viking Longships Project has been able to sustain itself, and a
ccomplish many impressive goals along the way. The project continues to challenge high school students as they become young professionals. The alternative learning environment teaches students an array of life skills as they become experts in several different aspects of Viking life and culture. From timber-framing, to mythology, to sports, blacksmithing and even battle re-enactments. The Viking Longships program provides a truly unique learning experience for every student. Although the program was founded and is directed by former Winthrop High School teacher George Skane, he'll be the first to credit the passion and drive of project's current and former students as the reason for its continued success.
