Winthrop Viking Longship Project

Winthrop Viking Longship Project This program is about educating students how to persevere to reach an ultimate, seemingly impossible

The Viking Longships Project is a class at Winthrop High School, which over the years has created a community devoted former students and has earned the respect of prominent members of the community in and around the town of Winthrop, MA. Through grants and the tireless efforts of hundreds of students over the course of three decades, Viking Longships Project has been able to sustain itself, and a

ccomplish many impressive goals along the way. The project continues to challenge high school students as they become young professionals. The alternative learning environment teaches students an array of life skills as they become experts in several different aspects of Viking life and culture. From timber-framing, to mythology, to sports, blacksmithing and even battle re-enactments. The Viking Longships program provides a truly unique learning experience for every student. Although the program was founded and is directed by former Winthrop High School teacher George Skane, he'll be the first to credit the passion and drive of project's current and former students as the reason for its continued success.

Hey everyone! Sorry we haven't posted anything in awhile, it's been busy setting up everything in the new room at the brand new school. Below are some pictures of our new room. There are some brand new machines that we are still working on setting up. An outside area for us to work with when the weather gets nicer. And an area for some of our students to work. We will posting other stuff soon!

These are pictures of the student-built Gokstad Viking Ship that has been hung in the new Middle-High school. Blueprints for the ship are displayed on the walls behind the ship. It's construction was conducted by Viking Longships students between 1996-1998 and was restored throughout the past year by current project members. The display holding the ship up was also designed by another member of the project. We are all proud to have contributed our hard work to this wonderful new school.
