Today has usually been a celebration of the end of the Winthrop Summer Recreation program but today is a bit sad for me. Today ends the last program I will have the pleasure of leading in this community. It isn’t the day I retire that is still 3 weeks away, but today is the end of last program.

I thank the community of Winthrop for all the fun, smiles and incredible memories. Thank to the hundreds of people who have worked here from Tammy Anderson (Anair), and Stephanie Lunt to all the incredible folks who taught Arts and Crafts, coaches track, tennis, were lifeguards, and staffed our Kids Club program. Thank you to all of the coaches who ran camps gave so much time to give the children of Winthrop and the surrounding areas experiences that have lasted lifetimes. Thank you to the thousands of kids who came to the programs, who learned to swim, tie dyed a t-shirt, hit a backhand, ran at a track meet, went of a trip Roller-skating, or to Funtown, or a Red Sox game.

I have been truly blessed; I tell folks for 42 years I have lived in the candy store of life. I learned early on in my career the best way to measure our success was to look for the smiles. No matter how tough a day would be if I could go see kids smiling and laughing things were good. Thank you for all the smiles.

I hope we have been a source of fun for your family. I am not looking for accolades but simply wanted to say Thank you Winthrop for 42 wonderful years. I hope to stay involved, but someone new must take over the reigns and create smiles and memories for next group of our children.

As most people know Lonney Steeves is retiring at the end of August. With this the Winthrop Area YMCA will be closing. Town of Winthrop will be taking the programs over and a new Recreation Coordinator is being hired. So, before that happens, we want to get the ball rolling for fall sports we are opening registration for:
1. Grade K to 6 Youth Soccer
2. Grade K to 6 Field Hockey
3. Grade 3 to 8 Running Club
When the new Recreation Coordinator starts, they will be in touch with more details and what the program registration fees are and how you will pay those fees.

The plan for now is to operate much the same as last fall.
• We hope for fees that are low and affordable
• We will offer programs from Pre K to Grade 6 in Soccer and Field Hockey
• Travel opportunities for Running Club for grades 3-8, Field Hockey grades 3-4 and 5-6, and Soccer grades 4-5-6.
• Field Hockey and Soccer will alternate weekends using the Charlies Field Turf, and Field Hockey will do other weekends at the High School Field Hockey Field, and Soccer will use the YMCA Camp Field.

Fee and payment information are not available at this time. As more details become available the new Recreation Coordinator will be emailed to you after you register. If you are unable to participate once the details are finalized, we can remove you from the files with no problem.

Please complete this form for each child in your family who is looking to participate, once the program details become available, if for some reason you are not interested in playing you can simply let them know to delete your registration.
