🐛 Spring Insect Walk with the Maine Entomological Society

📅 Tomorrow, Saturday, May 30 | 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
📍 Rosmarin & Saunders Family Forest, Readfield
☔ Rain date: Sunday, May 31

Join the Maine Entomological Society for a spring field trip at KLT's Rosmarin & Saunders Family Forest. Explore forest and wetland habitats alongside experienced entomologists and get a close look at the insects that quietly run these ecosystems, from pollinators to the prey that feeds our birds, fish, and amphibians.

Insects are declining across much of the world, and learning to notice them is a first step toward protecting them.

Stay as long as you like. No registration required.

🚗 Directions: From Route 41/17 in Readfield, turn onto Nickerson Hill Road, go about 0.6 miles, and turn left into the small parking area at the KLT sign. .

📍 Camp Cobbossee wood yard, field along RT 135
🗓 Last volunteer day: June 20

Specific directions: We’re working in East Monmouth in a field alongside Route 135 that’s right between the entrance to Camp Cobbossee for Boys and Launch Drive (public boat launch). Coming from Route 202 in Winthrop, go 6 miles on Rt 135. The wood yard is on the left side, and there’s a handmade sign that says "Kennebec Wood Bank" but you should also see our trucks and the wood.

Spring may be taking its time, but the bluebirds are busy at work! This is in Maryland, so it's only a few weeks away for us! Hopefully it will be a little warmer by then.

Fiddleheads, an early spring delicacy throughout the Northeast and Canadian Maritime Provinces, are the young coiled fronds of the ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris). Nearly all ferns have fiddleheads, but not all fiddleheads are edible. The Ostrich fern fiddleheads are edible, and can be identified by the brown, papery scale-like covering on the uncoiled fern.
