Wayback Wednesday!!!

Did you know that Maranacook was once a stop of the electric trolleys that once served Augusta, Hallowell and Gardiner?

The hand drawn map below shows the electric railway trackage through the towns of Augusta, Hallowell, Gardiner, Manchester and Winthrop. This road was originally built by the Augusta, Hallowell & Gardiner Street Railway in 1890. It was Maine’s second electric street railway. The line was taken over by Augusta, Winthrop & Gardiner Street Railway. Railway expansion continued until 1909. Island Park, a popular tourist destination with open air dancing pavilion and a theater, was developed by the railway company and continued on to the resort area of Maranacook Lake in Winthrop. The Winthrop line was abandoned in 1928, all other trackage on this map was abandoned in 1932.

Happy World Lakes Day!! Every August 27, the United Nations celebrates World Lakes Day, a day to reflect on the importance of these ecosystems as one of our planet’s most vital natural resources, essential as freshwater reserves and key habitats for biodiversity. Their conservation is vital for environmental balance but also for tackling climate change, one of main factors contributing to the deterioration of aquatic systems.

It only takes a few extra minutes to help keep the lake free of invasives.

A few extra minutes at the boat launch can help protect Maine’s waters.

Before leaving the water, remember to:

CLEAN off visible plants, animals, and mud from boats, trailers, fishing gear, and other equipment.

DRAIN all water from your boat and equipment away from the water.

DRY everything thoroughly before using it in another waterbody.

Aquatic invasive species can hitch a ride on boats and gear, including some that are too small to see. Making Clean, Drain, Dry part of every trip helps prevent them from spreading to new waters.
