Our administrative coordinator Lacy designed a new logo to celebrate our independent 501(c)3 status and our expansion from "Advocacy" to "Action." She also designed new MUUSAN placards for Pride! Keep an eye out for our new banners (here shown off by board co-chair Michaela) and our 'Unitarian Universalists Have Pride' signs at Pride celebrations all month long.

MUUSAN Members and Others - If you haven't already called or emailed your Maine state legislators about these 3 VERY IMPORTANT Maine state Climate bills, please do so right away, as the full legislature will vote on them THIS WEEK (Feb. 2 - 6th).

Please ask them to vote YES on the following bills:

LD 1870 – An Act to Establish a Climate Superfund Cost Recovery Program to Impose Penalties on Climate Polluters

LD 1730 - An Act to Make Small, Portable, Plug-in Solar Generation Devices Accessible for All Maine Residents to Address the Energy Affordability Crisis

LD 1966 – An Act to Improve Access to Community Solar Programs in the State [It is CRITICAL that this bill pass in 2026, to support the important Maine Community Power Cooperative continuing to operate in our state]

For more information about LD 1966 a fact sheet has been developed here.

Not sure who your state senator and representatives are? Go to this useful tool found on the MUUSAN website: Find Your Legislators - Maine Unitarian Universalist State Advocacy Network

MUUSAN is a member of the Maine Climate Action Now Coalition, so their programs are available to our membership.

There are two MCAN programs starting next week -- they are open to the public and free, so please share with your base/network if you'd like. Posters/social graphics attached.

We Are the Great Turning podcast group - Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:15pm on January 28, February 4, and Feb. 11 on Zoom
After a rich first series in the fall, MCAN and A Climate to Thrive are hosting a second series of three online gatherings to engage with the podcast We Are the Great Turning: Love, Courage and Connection in the Climate Crisis. About the podcast: "We welcome you to the kitchen table of the legendary eco-spiritual teacher Joanna Macy, where we’ll dive into what it takes to live with our hearts and integrity intact in this time of global crisis. You’ll be guided into these conversations by Jess Serrante, a longtime activist and student of Joanna’s. Together, we’ll discover abiding wisdom that can help us stay joyful and energized as we work toward a more just and life-sustaining world."

Of course it can feel hard, irresponsible even, to step away right now from the daily urgency to protect our communities and advocate for a safer and kinder world. Joanna Macy is an amazing mentor for honoring our pain, and going forth with renewed vigor and clarity.

Writing as Witnessing - Tuesday evenings, 7:00 - 8:30 PM, Jan. 27 - March 3 on Zoom
In partnership with New England-based author Chelsea Steinauer-Scudder, MCAN is offering a climate storytelling workshop for adults. As our lands and waters change around us, how do we tell the story of this moment in time? How are we called to act? What does it look like to bear witness?

This six-part online course will explore writing about climate change from our communities, our local ecologies, and our bodies, giving voice and agency to both our own lived experiences and to various elements of the living world with whom we share our homes. From creatures and plants, to seasons and the body, we will consider themes of interconnection and interdependency, loss and change, and resiliency and adaptation. We’ll explore how nonfiction writing can interweave these different voices, themes, and experiences to tell compelling stories that bear witness to this moment.

Please reach out with any questions or thoughts.

Take care,
Michelle

🚨 ACTION ALERT: Testify AGAINST Anti-Trans Bills in Maine! 🚨
📅 Thursday, May 8

📍State House, Augusta, ME

Trans youth deserve safety, dignity, and the freedom to be themselves at school and beyond. But new bills in the Maine Legislature would prohibit trans girls from playing on girls’ sports teams, weaken civil rights, and invite bullying and harassment of all youth. Some bills even threaten to strip trans people of their legal protections from discrimination by removing gender identity from the Maine Human Rights Act.
