Yesterday our Field Immersion trainees’ tracking skills were *literally* put to the test during a Tracker Certification North America evaluation with David Moskowitz. We found the tracks and sign of moose, river otter, bear, skunk, many bird species, and more. Natalie received a Level 2 certification and Adrian received a Level 3! Congratulations and happy tracking to you both! 🎉 🐾

📸 Actually a more rare sighting for our trail cam to capture a snowshoe hare during the day! We have thousands of photos of these typically nocturnal creatures hopping around at night- so special to see their bright white coat in the daylight! 🐇

Turns out moose might be up to no good after midnight 😂 Check out this 1am sparring match between two bulls!

Male moose can often be seen locking antlers as an attempt to establish which bull is the dominant one prior to mating season. Although sometimes these sparring matches may just be practice matches for younger bulls to build up strength in their neck. And sometimes, it can even be play!

Meet your instructor: Gabe Spence, Wolf Biologist for the Washington Dept of Fish & Wildlife 🐺

Gabe lived in the Methow Valley at the time the first breeding wolf pack re-established in Washington in 2008 and volunteered to help monitor them. He has been formally working with wolves in Washington state since 2013 either conducting research or working for WDFW as a wolf biologist. His research was on wolf predation and earned him an M.S. in Natural Resource Sciences from WSU. Gabe has a background in wildlife tracking as well and is a certified track and sign specialist through Cybertracker North America. Capturing and collaring wolves via trapping is one of the primary duties of his job. In the past Gabe has worked on projects capturing beavers, lynx, and cougars.

Gabe will be teaching wildlife track and sign at our upcoming Wildlife Field Techniques course 🐾 join us to get to know him and the rest of the team!
