Damaris Luna-Cruz (11th) competed on February 28, in a regional Shakespeare competition in New Bern. She won First Place in her performance of a monologue from Pericles, Prince of Tyre and of Sonnet 40. Her success means that she will be heading to New York City on an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the national competition against high school students from around the country. While there, students will take in a Broadway play.

The sponsoring group for this annual competition (who generously pay for the winner’s trip to New York) is The English-Speaking Union, Colonial Branch in New Bern. The Colonial Branch is one of six branches in North Carolina and part of an international organization based in London. Its honorary patron is Anne, the Princess Royal, daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

We can support Damaris by voting for her in the People’s Choice Award competition. See the link in our stories to view her video and vote.

Congrats Damaris! We are so proud of you!
