In 2020 the entire United States and global audience was upset, angry, sad and disappointed that another black man had been murdered at the hands of the people who were suppose to protect us. This led to a series of national and global protest against police brutality. The protest were often expressed through marches, but also through the expression of art through the creation of murals.
My organization, People Against Racism, marched in different cities but also sought approval from the city of Winterville NC to put two murals at Hillcrest Park. Both black and white council members voted approved it except Ricky Hines who was a council member at the time.
Just another moment Mayor Hines refuses to speak up for black people when it pertains to mistreatment by police. Why is he always silent? If he's not serving our interest, who's interest is he serving. He said he was voted in by the people for the people. So what's the problem with him speaking up for black people?
Before I sued Winterville, Mayor Hines said nothing about the misconduct of the police officers. He could have but he didn't. After I sued Winterville he then used the lawsuit as justification not to say anything. There's no law that says a Mayor can't speak up and fight for a person that's been abused by a department that's He's over. By the people for the people‼️
