Andy's Friends Cat Rescue & Adoption Welcome to Andy's Friends Cat Rescue! Based in Wilmington, DE, our mission is to save as many lives as we can through fostering and adoption.

Andy's Friends is a rescue that provides food, medical services, and safe housing to homeless cats and kittens until loving homes can be found. Our cats are strays, rescued from shelters where adoptable cats are in danger of being euthanized, or owner surrenders. All of our cats and kittens are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Most orange cats you see are actually male — and the reason is hidden in their genetics. 🧬🐈

The gene responsible for orange fur in cats is carried on the X chromosome.

Male cats have only one X chromosome, so if they inherit the orange gene, their coat will usually be completely orange.

Female cats, however, have two X chromosomes. This means they can carry both the orange and black genes at the same time. When that happens, their fur forms beautiful mixed patterns like tortoiseshell or calico, where patches of orange and black appear together.

Because of this genetic difference, most orange cats are male, while most tortoiseshell and calico cats are female.

Nature hides some incredible stories in the smallest details — even in the color of a cat’s fur.
