What is the role of a Christian care counselor?

And, more importantly, what is NOT?

Care counselors should provide Biblical guidance, offer emotional and spiritual support, and refer to professional counselors when necessary.

Care counselors should NOT diagnose mental disorders, provide medical treatment, nor offer long-term therapy.

One of the best ways to walk in Godly wisdom while counseling is to remember what your role is, and more importantly, what should be left for the professionals. Not every problem is ours to fix. 🙌🏻💙

Training doesn’t always happen behind a screen. We come along side your team in person, too. 📖✏️

Recently, our founder, Dr. Tim Lloyd, traveled to One Community Church in Plano, Texas to provide in-person training for a team of counselors on trauma-informed care.

While online training offers flexibility and accessibility, in-person training creates space for deeper conversations, meaningful questions, and hand-on learning.

We’re excited to introduce Care Pathways, a new initiative from Telos designed to connect individuals, churches, counselors, and recovery communities with trusted, Christ-centered resources for healing and restoration.

Whether you’re navigating addiction recovery, trauma, or simply seeking your next step toward wholeness, Care Pathways exists to help you find biblically integrated resources that support lasting transformation.

As part of this initiative, we’ve launched our “My Healing Journey” page, featuring self-guided courses from Tim Fletcher at a special discount for the Telos community. These courses are designed to complement counseling, recovery groups, church ministries, and other supportive communities.

Forgiveness is one of the hardest things we’re called to do, yet it is also one of the most freeing.

When we hold on to bitterness, resentment, or the desire to make things right ourselves, we often become the ones carrying the heaviest burden. Forgiveness means entrusting justice to God and refusing to let the hurt define us.

Who might God be inviting you to forgive today?

“But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” —Matthew 6:15

God is not helpless among the ruins of our lives.

Trauma may leave a mark on our stories, but it does not have the power to define who we are in Christ or limit the healing He can bring.

Psalm 147:3 reminds us that He “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Even in the places that feel broken, God is present, compassionate, and faithful.

As the Church, we can learn to respond to those impacted by trauma with greater understanding and wisdom.

Our Trauma-Informed Ministry course equips believers and ministry leaders with practical, Christ-centered tools to better support those who are hurting.

If you think this course is something that you may benefit from, we'd love to give you FREE access. Message us for more information.

In case you needed a reminder today, here it is: God isn’t asking you to earn His love through perfection.

Take a breath and rest knowing that Jesus loves you even when you don’t meet the impossible standards you set for yourself. He isn’t finished with you. He’s still shaping you, growing you, and transforming you into His likeness.

Why don’t you give yourself the same grace that God so freely offers you?

“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” ~ Philippians 1:6 (NIV)

Sometimes the most difficult question is simply… ”Why?”

As counselors, we won’t always have an explanation, but we can always point people to the God who is present, faithful, and unchanging. His promises are stronger than our uncertainty, and we know that he is always working for His glory and our good.

We are called to carry each other’s burdens.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

As Christians, we believe turning to Christ is the first step of a beautiful journey. But spiritual formation is a lifelong process. It involves healing, self-reflection, discipleship, and learning to walk in the freedom Christ died to give us.

Counseling is one place where that inner work takes place. It’s where we experience Christ’s love more deeply. Healing begins to take root. New insight leads to freedom. Chains are broken, addictions lose their grip, and lives begin to change.

As that healing unfolds, something remarkable happens. We naturally want to share that freedom with others. We want to come alongside those who are hurting. We want to carry each other’s burdens because that’s what we’ve been called to do.

That is the heart behind Telos.

We exist to bring hope and healing to a hurting world by equipping everyday Christians to care well for the people God has placed in their lives.

Through low-cost and no-cost training, we prepare lay counselors with practical skills, biblical wisdom, guidance, and ongoing oversight as they support their neighbors, communities, and congregations.

We also provide resources for anyone walking through their own healing and sanctification journey.

Our courses are about far more than counseling. They help us become more compassionate spouses, parents, friends, coworkers, ministry leaders, and neighbors. The skills are practical, transferable, and valuable in every area of life.

One of our core values is trauma-informed ministry. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with you?” we learn to ask, “What’s going on in your life?” That simple shift replaces judgment with curiosity, deepens understanding, and opens the door to compassion, connection, and lasting change.

We don’t heal in isolation.

We heal in community.

We grow in Christ.

Then we help others do the same.

Let’s carry each other’s burdens. Let’s be the hands and feet of Jesus as we bring hope and healing to a hurting world.

Hope. Healing. Wholeness.

Every day, we’re cultivating something.

Colossians 2:7: “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”

May we nurture what brings us closer to Christ and bears lasting fruit. 🙌🏻🌳

Many people assume churches need licensed counselors before they can provide meaningful care. As a result, some churches may feel unequipped to respond to the growing mental health needs in their communities.

The truth? With the right training, lay counselors can walk alongside people with compassion while recognizing when professional care is needed.

We believe the local church has an important role to play in bringing hope and healing to its community, and we're committed to equipping churches to do just that.

💬 We'd love to hear from you: How is your church caring for the emotional and mental health needs of your community?
