After reflecting on the role memory and identity continue to play in Northern Ireland, students made their way south to Dublin for the next chapter of the journey.

There, they shared dinner with former Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, who spoke about the challenges of peacebuilding in Ireland and the lessons his work continues to offer communities around the world. Conversations throughout the evening centered on leadership, reconciliation, and what it takes to move societies forward after conflict. ✨

Day three in Belfast was a deep dive into what it takes to move from conflict toward peace.

Students explored the lasting impact of the Good Friday Agreement by hearing directly from people who lived through the violence, journalists who reported from the front lines, and leaders working every day to strengthen the peace process. They were welcomed at City Hall by Honourable High Sheriff Frank McCoubrey and later shared a meal with the post-Good Friday generation: young leaders shaping a new future for Northern Ireland through dialogue, courage, and community. ✨

Day two in Belfast 🇮🇪✨

Today, the group visited sites marked by both violence and peacemaking, learning more about Belfast’s long journey from conflict to peace and from peace to governance. Students met with senior leaders from nationalist and loyalist communities, experts from Queen’s University Belfast, and members of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

One of the most impactful reminders of the day was that while peace agreements can end conflict, communities still carry its lasting effects. Conversations around ongoing challenges with mental health, substance abuse, and generational trauma highlighted the human cost violence leaves behind.

At the same time, hearing directly from peacemakers and civic leaders showed the incredible power individuals have to create change in their own communities through dialogue, trust-building, and the willingness to listen.

The day concluded with a special dinner at Stormont hosted by MLA and Health Minister Mike Nesbitt alongside emerging young leaders helping shape Northern Ireland’s future. 🌍

From Central Florida to Belfast & Dublin! 🇮🇪🌍

Dr. Lua Hancock and Samantha Romero joined a delegation of students from and Egypt for a powerful week with Rethinking Conflict focused on dialogue, peacebuilding, and understanding across differences.

Day one set the stage with lessons on the journey from a long war to a long peace, exploring the history, identities, and narratives that continue to shape this region today. These conversations will help inspire our work toward making Central Florida America’s most welcoming community. 💙

Tonight, leaders from multiple political parties came together to share not only where they disagree, but how they actively listen to one another, seek understanding, and work side by side to build a more peaceful future. A powerful reminder that dialogue can truly change communities. 🤝

Having a team to lean on is essential when working on issues so close to the community. The unmotivated days will come, and having someone to reach out to makes all the difference!

Balancing anger and enthusiasm is part of the work—but staying grounded between the two is where the real challenge begins. In community organizing, that tension can either burn you out or push meaningful change forward. It all depends on how you channel it.
