For so many , the home isn’t just where grief lives — it’s often the first casualty of it. Rising costs, lost income, a name no longer on the loan. The house she raised her family or as a couple becomes the house she can no longer afford.

Today on Widow Life® Substack, we’re talking about widows and America’s housing crisis.

Not every widow has to move from the home she shared with her spouse. But some do — because of money, because of health, because staying simply isn’t possible anymore. What happens to her?

Sometimes she moves to a tiny home, or mother-in-law quarters, mom-sharing spaces, travel trailers, or HUD Section 8 housing choice voucher programs ….. and some, become homeless altogether.
Advocacy around real widow stories impacting their lives happens here at MWC.

Widowed families with children need both immediate and long-term support. On the Healthy Widow Healthy Woman healthywidowhealthywoman podcast, Social Security expert David Weaver joined us to unpack a striking statistic: 45% of eligible U.S. families aren’t collecting the Social Security children’s benefits they’re owed after a spouse dies.

We dig into why this gap exists—and what it will take to close it.

The Stages of Widowhood: A Roadmap Discovered, Not Invented
“Twenty-six years ago, I became a widow. Fifteen years ago, I opened my home to other widows who needed somewhere to land — and Modern Widows Club®️ was born. I wasn’t trying to build a framework. I was trying to survive, and help other women survive alongside me. But watching thousands of widows move through their grief over the years, a pattern kept surfacing. Widowhood isn’t a single moment you “get over.” It’s an evolution — one I’ve now lived through myself.

Stage 1 — Years 1-5/7: Rebuilding New Identity 🦋
The foundation years — navigating raw loss, healing deeply, laying the groundwork for a new sense of self.

Stage 2 — Years 6-12/14: Living Fully & Refining That New Identity 🌳
Joy returns. Purpose returns. This is where you stop just surviving your new identity and start actively shaping it.

Stage 3 — Years 13-19/21: Empowering Others & Advocating with Understanding 💛🤍
Your story becomes a bridge. You lead from lived experience, because you finally understand your own path well enough to help others walk theirs. This is the season MWC was born in.

Stage 4 — Years 20-26/28: Global Advocate & Understanding the Full Landscape 🌍
Twenty-six years in, I’m living this stage now — seeing the full picture, the systems, the gaps, the injustices widows face worldwide. This is legacy work.
This is fighting to change what the next generation of widows will inherit.” - MWC Founder Carolyn Moor

“Your widowhood journey has stages. Your impact has no limits.”

This isn’t a clock you’re racing. It’s a map that says: wherever you are, you’re not broken — you’re becoming.

What an honor meeting with Dr. Mary-Frances O’Connor (Mary-Frances O'Connor) today as she prepares to accept our 2026 Legacy Award on Oct. 20! ✨

Fresh off a year-long sabbatical, she’s as gracious as ever — and you have the rare chance to meet her in person. If you’ve read The Grieving Brain or The Grieving Body, you know her research doesn’t just explain what grief does to us. It reveals what we’re capable of beyond it. Perfectly aligned with our Hope, Heal, Grow, Lead programs, resources and widow advocacy.

This is our ONE gathering each year — where our members, donors, and champions for widow care come together in person.

If you’ve ever longed to be in a room full of people devoted to elevating support for widows, this is that room.

For 15 years, Modern Widows Club®️ | The Movement for Widow Care® (MWC) has been building something we didn't have when we needed it most: a movement that meets as the health crisis it truly is.

We can't put an exact number on it — but we know millions of and the people who love them have found stability, confidence, and purpose through the women's health programs and resources we've built together.

Every Wister® (widow sister) who found her footing, every community that formed around a shared loss, every widow who rediscovered her sense of self and elevated meaning in life— that's the ripple effect of this work.

Fifteen years of Hope. Heal. Grow. Lead®. And we're just getting started.

We're also honored to share that the Russell Berrie Foundation has once again granted Modern Widows Club $5,000 in recognition of our exceptional leadership and advocacy.

Thanks to President Angelica Berrie, a Wister, guided by a mission of Transformational Giving for exceptional leaders, the Foundation recognizes individuals who have made a significant difference in the lives of others — and being named among them, again, is a humbling reminder of why this work matters.

We are grateful on this special day for all our foundational donors, volunteers, board members, ambassadors, members and champions who have contributed to this movement for widow care, as we know the building of this foundation has been audacious and necessary. Without it, our nonprofit would not exist today as a public health charity.

Choose us as your charitable giving cause and become a part of the movement for widow care. It begins with us. Become a nonprofit contributor here: https://modernwidowsclub-bloom.kindful.com
