Welcome to the final chapter of our summer student stories series! (Try saying that 5 times fast.) It's our pleasure to introduce you to Shevin AKA Kevin! ๐คฉ
Kevin, 36, is a plumber and single dad from the only English-speaking nation in South America, Guyana. ๐ฌ๐พ๐จ๐พโ๐งKevin's dad pulled him out of school when he was just 6 years old to go to work with him, meaning he never learned to read or write.
Kevin's supervisor sees him in a leadership position one day, but team leads must be able to read and write to communicate with clients and team members effectively. So, his supervisor and HR rep connected him with the Adult Literacy League to be matched with a tutor. ๐ฉโ๐ซ
Kevin was matched with Susie, who became his most ardent cheerleader. She taught him how to sound out letters to create words. Pretty soon, he had read his very first book cover to cover: The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. Now, he takes home the books he reads with Susie and reads them to his sons at bedtime. Him and his older son take turns reading and correcting each other while his youngest son cheers them both on. ๐ง๐พโโ๏ธ๐๐ฆ๐พ๐ฆ๐พ
Kevin's not only studying to get ahead at work, but he's also studying to show his boys that anything is possible. Adult literacy is childhood literacy is FAMILY LITERACY, too! ๐๐
Will you give as generously as you're able to help more students like Kevin today? A donation to the Adult Literacy League isn't just an investment in our students, it's an investment in their families and the health of our community as a whole! ๐
