We love our summer camp visitors 💙 These young scientists from the Florida Oceanographic Society Summer Camp spent the day at TNC's Blowing Rocks Preserve in South Florida. In our plant nursery, campers helped collect red mangrove propagules and planted the seedlings. In the water, they used seine and dips nets to discover the diverse fish and invertebrate species found in the Indian River Lagoon, including French grunt, great barracuda, checkered puffer, dwarf seahorse, pipefish, urchins, and more.

TNC in Florida's preserves are campuses of the Center for Conservation Initiatives (TNC CCI), serving as on-the-ground hubs where we partner with educational programs, schools, universities, colleges, agencies and communities to provide a hands-on environment to learn about and address critical conservation questions. TNC's Land Conservation Manager Sarah Kittredge caught this once in a lifetime moment on camera, but at Blowing Rocks Preserve, it's a pretty common occurrence. These hatchlings emerged from one of the nearly 1,400 loggerhead sea turtle nests documented at the preserve this season.

After a lengthy drought across the southeast, TNC staff were activated and ready after the rains finally came and the burn bans lifted. Together, fire pros from TNC's Center for Conservation Initiatives conducted a prescribed fire at Tiger Creek Preserve. Our ability to spark quick action was thanks to our hard work during the ban: mowing and maintaining firebreaks and surveying and treating non-native invasive plant species.

Blowing Rocks Preserve is a barrier island protected for its natural beauty, its distinctive rocky Anastasia limestone shoreline and its important sea turtle nesting beach.

America just gained a new UNESCO World Heritage Site! And the honor couldn't go to a more fitting place: the Okefenokee Swamp just across our northern border.

About the Okefenokee:
- North America's largest blackwater swamp
- Feeds into two rivers and two oceans: the Suwannee and St. Marys rivers and onto the Gulf and Atlantic.
- TNC and partners have helped defend the swamp from development and mining threats with land purchases surrounding the swamp.

Marshes migrate 🌊 But only if there's space for them to move. Human-made infrastructure like sea walls, roads and buildings block trap our marshes between rising water and hardened shorelines. This is called 'coastal squeeze,' and if our marshes can't migrate with rising seas, we may lose them forever.
