NAHN Central Florida proudly partnered with St. Rose of Lima Church during its food pantry outreach to serve underserved members of our community. Through this partnership, we had the opportunity to provide blood pressure screenings and health education to many individuals within the Latino/a community.
To our surprise, several participants were found to have elevated blood pressure and were unaware of their condition. Our team provided education in Spanish on the risks and complications associated with hypertension, as well as practical lifestyle changes and strategies to help improve blood pressure control.
The community members were extremely grateful for the culturally and linguistically appropriate education and support, reinforcing the importance of accessible healthcare outreach and NAHN Central Florida’s commitment to improving health outcomes in the communities we serve.

Celebrating Nurses Week by honoring the strength, compassion, and impact of Hispanic nurses 💙
Hispanic/Latino nurses make up about 9% of the U.S. nursing workforce, yet represent a much larger portion of the population—showing both their growing presence and the need for continued representation
From breaking language barriers to delivering culturally competent care, Hispanic nurses are improving patient outcomes, building trust, and advocating for communities that need it most.
We are more than caregivers—we are voices, leaders, and change-makers.

Recent research from the American Cancer Society points to these cancers as the most prominent in the hispanic community (ACS,2024) Unfortunately the evidence points to high rates of mortality from these cancers mainly due to lack of screenings and education. In remembrance of all those lost to cancer, and to commemorate Cancer Research Month; this post shares information about the recommended screenings for hispanic all over the world. Resources like the AMIGAS Educational Outreach Program, screening calendars, and regular primary medical screenings can help prevent and decrease mortality related to the disease.

It's all about the VOLUNTEERS!!

This week we take extra time to thank our volunteers; without them we wouldn't be where we are.

For decades, volunteers have been the silent backbone of not only the healthcare industry, but of every industry that involves human interactions. The essential role played by volunteers helps bridge employment, education and even financial gaps faced by our communities. Their contributions are so significant that the United Nations (UN) declared 2026 as the International Volunteer Year for Sustainable Development.

If you know any volunteers, please thank them for their time and efforts. Don't know any volunteers? be the change you want to see in the world and become one today. Explore volunteering events on our page or on your local health department websites.

¿No conoce a ninguno?

The NAHN Central Florida March meeting was filled with meaningful networking, celebrating the accomplishments of our Latino community, and engaging in powerful conversations about the disparities that still affect us.

It was truly eye-opening to reflect on the contrast being part of a community that is growing and thriving, yet continues to face significant challenges in accessing equitable healthcare.

We also participated in an interactive activity where we stepped into the role of different families navigating real-life healthcare barriers highlighting disparities related to access, cost, language, and cultural understanding. This experience brought deeper awareness and perspective to the challenges many face every day.

Calling all nurses in Central Florida who would like to join our chapter—come be part of a community dedicated to growth, advocacy, and making a difference!

Together, we remain committed to uplifting one another, raising awareness, and advocating for change. 💙

🌎Happy World Health Day 🌏

As of 2026 the U.S. Hispanic population shows a higher life expectancy (81) compared to non-hispanic groups(78) . Nonetheless, we still face significant health disparities regarding diabetes, heart desease, and even cervical cancer. (CDC, 2023)

Let’s take today to make our best efforts to not only make healthier choices but to support those making better choices all around our communities.

Resources like our website or local health departments provide geographically appropriate suggestions for specific concern topics.
