“In todays Gospel, Jesus did not send the Apostles out alone; instead, he sent them 2 by 2. This shows the importance & strength of working together to bring about the Kingdom of God. This idea of going out 2 by 2 is also reminiscent of Noah gathering & bringing the animals 2 by 2 into the ark. 2 were needed to multiply life, to be fruitful. Perhaps Jesus sent the Apostles & later the 72 disciples, in the same way, because 2 could effectively “multiply” the message of the Gospel. Sometimes working with others to build up Christ’s Kingdom can be difficult, but our diverse ideas, strengths & personalities make us stronger & more effective.
Reflection: Are you eager to place yourself at his service, to do whatever he bids you & to witness his truth & saving power to whomever he sends you?

St. Benedict, you were a man of peace.
Through your powerful intercession with God help us to be peacemakers.
Aid us to work for peace, to take the first step in ending bitterness, to be the first to hold out our hands in friendship and forgiveness. Help us to achieve peace; peace in our hearts, peace in our homes, peace in our sorely troubled world. And at the end of our lives obtain for us the reward of peacemakers, the eternal blessed vision of God in heaven. Amen.

“Pope St. John Paul II said,

Mary's words at the Annunciation "I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word" (Lk 1:38), indicate an attitude characteristic of Jewish piety. At the beginning of the Old Covenant, Moses, in response to the Lord's call, proclaims himself his servant (cf. Ex 4:10; 14:31).

With the coming of the New Covenant, Mary also responds to God with an act of free submission and conscious abandonment to his will, showing her complete availability to be the "handmaid of the Lord."

Mary, "full of grace," by proclaiming herself "handmaid of the Lord" intends to commit herself to fulfil personally and in a perfect manner the service God expects of all his people.”

Maundy Thursday is a day to remember the disciples gathering around Jesus before his death. We often remember the story as that of the Last Supper & a story that ushers in betrayal. But, it is also a story about love, grace & how we relate to those who want us harmed.
Jesus washes the disciples’ feet. Every disciple. Jesus also predicts his death & the betrayal of Judas. Yet he washes Judas’ feet. Jesus knew what Judas would do, but still, he breaks bread with him. Jesus extends love & the possibility of change redemption all the way to the end. He never treats Judas as ‘the enemy’, as worthless, as someone whose dignity & humanity can just be erased or disregarded. Even in betrayal & pain, Jesus attends to the humanity of the one who hurts him.
My prayer for the world today is that this same attention to one another’s dignity & humanity would be at the core of our actions as people & as nations.
“Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world & go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” — John 13.1

“How can we possibly love as God loves & overcome evil with good? With God all things are possible. He gives power & grace to those who believe & accept the gift of the Holy Spirit. His love conquers all, even our hurts, fears, prejudices & griefs. Only the cross of Jesus Christ can free us from the tyranny of malice, hatred, revenge & resentment & gives us the courage to return evil with good. Such love & grace has power to heal & to save from destruction.
Reflection: Do you know the power of Christ's redeeming love and mercy?”
