Lake Region Audubon Society

Lake Region Audubon Society Educating about birds, wildlife and conservation. Education is one of our top priorities at LRAS.

Conservation

Conservation projects taken by our chapter include habitat restoration and enhancement, and an active position in defending our conservation interests by assisting the local goverment in decision making on environmental issues. Our chapter's members are involved in several projects including bird and butterflies' census and bird counts such as the Christmas Bird Count and the Feeder

Watch programs. Education

One of our goals is to educate our community about the importance of protecting our environment through conservation, education and actions. Many sucessful conservation projects are the result of a careful study of the situation combined with the education of the parties involved. By teaching our kids today, we are seeding for a brighter future tomorrow. Please check our nature educational programs for more information on how we can help your organization in sending the protection and conservation message. The more people learn and understand about their environment , the wildlife, and plants that thrive in them, the more likely people are to conserve and protect them. Additional Programs

In addition to our conservation efforts and education, our chapter also provide our community with other programs such as nature art, landscaping workshops, photography and many others. These programs help to bring the community together to work collaborately while gaining awareness on thier natural surroundings.

This is a Chicken Turtle. Not a very common testudine in Florida. IN case you wondered, it is believe their name comes from their chicken-like taste which in the 1800's was preferred over that of the Florida Cooter. Perhaps one of the reasons why they are not easy to find. Notice their super fat line on their front legs, and the reticulated carapace as their trademark. Helped this one cross the road along US441 in Osceola Co.

This is one of my favorite northamerican insects, the grizzled mantis. They are so good at hiding. Their cryptic coloration together with their smooth moves make this mantid, a master of disguise. Tip: They love oak trees in case you want to look for one.

If I were the king of Florida, there’d be a statue of J. Emory “Red” Cross in front of every government building. Red Cross was a state senator from Gainesville who became the Father of the Sunshine Law. Cross was a classic Florida character. He strolled the marble halls of Tallahassee clad in...

Here's another troubling development: a state forest land swap for a golf course. This move sets a dangerous precedent, suggesting that state natural lands can be traded away to make way for development. The swap involves 324 acres of the Withlacoochee State Forest for some 860 acres of pine plantation. Did anybody ask what lives on those 324 acres of forest. Do the math chances are the plantation probably does not have the same environmental benefit or value of the 324 acres of forest.

The deafening, bipartisan uproar over the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s plans to add golf courses, hotels and more to nine state parks has rocked the state in the past

Just wanted to keep you updated with the FDEP State Park proposal This just came from Audubon Florida. The FDEP has retracted the project to build three golf courses at Jonathan Dickinson. There's more work to be done!

It seems the FDEP has postponed the hearing on the State Park proposed development, perhaps for the many of people that flooded their phone and emails in the last few days. Perhaps they may be looking for extra time to prepare themselves better for the opposition. I'll keep you posted with the new dates in September, they still have not release them.

Sad news for Florida's Wildlife and Wildlands. DeSantis.....Putting money in the Everglades, but destroying natural habitats elsewhere in the state...That's not how conservation is done.

The state Department of Environmental Protection this week announced what it has dubbed a “Great Outdoors Initiative” aimed at expanding public access to state parks. The announcement included such…
