As the Microschool year comes to an end and standardized testing deadlines begin approaching, we want to remind families and our community of something important:
A test score tells part of a story, but it does not tell the whole story.
It doesn’t show the child who now writes neatly after months of practice. It doesn’t show increased reading stamina, improved confidence, stronger friendships, better emotional regulation, creativity, curiosity, or the countless connections made through meaningful experiences.
It doesn’t capture the student who learned to persevere through challenges, speak up for themselves, collaborate with others, or discover a passion for learning.
At Kipe Academy, we teach to the whole child.
While we do not use traditional grades, our students have goals, and we expect growth and success. We measure progress in many ways, including:

📝 Student-centered progress reports
📖 Anecdotal notes and observations
📊 STAR standardized assessments
📂 Portfolios filled with evidence of learning
Testing can provide one data point, but it is never the only measure of a child’s growth.
This article does a wonderful job explaining why learning is so much bigger than a test score and why alternative forms of accountability matter:
Escaping the Accountability Trap: How Do We Know They’re Learning?
As educators, parents, and community members, let’s remember to look at the whole child and celebrate all the ways they grow. 💛
