Hello Douglas County! We are gearing up for an amazing C4K year! We have been busy collaborating with early childhood programs around the county! We will have some openings for individuals, **who qualify**, to sign up through our online intake, which will open sometime after this week. We anticipate that spots will fill quickly, unfortunately. We look forward to providing a brighter Christmas for underprivileged children in our county this season. 🎄 🎁 🎅

11/19/2024

Our intake form has now closed for the 2024 season. Remember, submitting an intake does not guarantee you will be on our list. If we are able to provide for your child/ren, you will receive a phone call by Dec 5th.

We are truly thankful for our supporters who donate throughout the year that allow us to continue making Christmas brighter for Douglas County children. ✨️ ❤️

Hello, Douglas County! We are getting into full swing for the season. We are working closely with a variety of programs and contacts around the county.

Due to funding, we will have a limited number of spots available through our website www.c4kdc.org next month. We are unsure what day the intake form will open, and spots will fill very quickly.

We wish we could help all children in our county. We do our very best to reach as many as we possibly can, however.

Hello, everyone! If you have not received a call to confirm, we will not be able to provide for your child/ren this season. Those of you who have filled out an intake form, please remember this does not guarentee you will be on our list. There are multiple factors that come into place to receive our support each year. We truly wish we could help every child here in Douglas County receive a brighter Christmas. We do our best at reaching those in need, which will be about 1,400 children this year.

Roseburg Police Officers and other local law enforcement “elves” are preparing to help kids “Shop with a Cop” during a holiday shopping spree primarily funded by a nonprofit whose Roseburg roots stretch back more than 20 years and have ties to Pete’s Drive-In and Roseburg Forest Products.

And it all started with a Pete’s Drive-In waitress who helped two little boys have a good Christmas.

Police, parole and probation officers will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Walmart, 2125 NW Stewart Parkway, to take up to 28 disadvantaged foster children shopping to buy holiday presents for their families. Participating children also get to visit with Santa, who provides gifts including a stocking full of goodies to each child.

The shopping spree is supported by a $2,500 donation from the nonprofit Christmas for Kids of Douglas County and other donations. Walmart donates wrapping paper, tape and scissors, as well as snacks for children.

The holiday event is being organized by Roseburg City Councilor Andrea Zielinski, who is also the human resources manager at FCC Furniture, and Roseburg Police Sgt. Daniel Allen.

In November, Sgt. Allen sent out a request for local law enforcement volunteers and expressed gratitude to all the officers and other volunteers who helped make last Christmas special for so many children. The event is a great opportunity for officers to have a positive impact on the children and each other, he said.

“The goal is to not only help these children have a good Christmas, but to also give them a positive experience with law enforcement,” he added. “Christmas for Kids has again donated to the cause and what a way for us to give back, be a positive influence to the children in our community and show the community that we support them.”

The event has been primarily funded by Christmas for Kids of Douglas County for about six years.

That nonprofit grew from a 16-year-old waitress’ desire to help two little boys more than 20 years ago.

Amy Newport was working at Pete’s Drive-in on West Harvard Avenue one summer when two small boys started showing up regularly to buy a milkshake together. They never had enough money, so Newport made up the difference from spare change in her tip jar, said Christmas for Kids of Douglas County Chairman Dale Pritchett.

As summer went on, she noticed the boys always wore the same clothes and shoes. When school started, Newport followed the boys home to meet their parents. She asked the couple if she could help the boys have Christmas. The parents agreed. Newport set out a Christmas fund collection jar at Pete’s for them that Christmas.

The next year, she put out jars all over town and raised enough money to buy Christmas presents for 10 kids whose names she got from a local agency. After turning 18 the following year, Newport got a job with Roseburg Forest Products. As Christmas neared, Newport asked a foreman if the company might allow her to set out collection jars. Instead, the foreman suggested setting up an option for payroll deductions. They raised enough money to buy presents for about 150 kids that year.

Soon after, Newport and the foreman talked about the Christmas fundraising effort with Roseburg Forest Products founder Kenneth “Pappy” Ford. He suggested setting up a way for people to donate monthly and offered to match donated funds. By the next year, the fund was able to buy Christmas presents for about 350 children, Pritchett said.

From that, Christmas for Kids of Douglas County was born. Roseburg Forest Products and its employees are still some of their major supporters, along with about 12 local businesses, a lumber and sawmill workers’ union, the Roseburg Optimist Club, Sunrise Enterprises and Greater Douglas United Way.

Newport has since gotten married and moved to Eugene. But her attempt to help two small boys one long-ago Christmas grew into a nonprofit that provided Christmas gifts to about 1,200 local children in 2021.

Hello Douglas County! First off, we would like to thank you all for your continued support in 2022. Our funding is much lower than it has been the last couple years, but we had expected it to fall. We will still be providing for around 1,100 underprivileged Douglas County Children. Our intake was open, but we had to close it quickly due to funding and spots. We may be able to open it back up, but we don't know quite yet. Thank you all for your patience. We've had some unexpected life happenings that have delayed responding to your individual messages right away. 🎄🎁🎅

Christmas for Kids has been hard at work here at the Douglas County North Pole! While the process of our events has changed, providing for underprivileged children in our County is still our mission!! We will be providing for about 1,200 local children this year! We wish we could help every child, unfortunately, we have a long wait list. Send us a FB message next year in September to get an idea of when the online intake will be open at Www.c4kdc.org, or check the website frequently next Sept-Oct. We support children in a number of Douglas County early childhood programs, as well as having online intake forms for self-nominations. The online intake is closed for this season.. we wish everyone a very safe and wonderful Merry Christmas. 🎄 🎅 ❄
