I didn’t realize when I started Step Sisters how much I needed this, too.
Saturday, women showed up for our biggest walk yet. We walked, talked, laughed, and then stayed for a picnic together.
Tuesday morning, we walked at Tanglewood and went for coffee afterward. Tuesday night, women from different places logged onto Zoom for our very first Step Sisters Book Club meeting. We’re reading Every Breath together as we count down to our Step Sisters Kindred Spirits Coastal Gathering next month, but women who aren’t attending the Gathering are reading and joining us, too. 💜
And that’s something I’m especially thankful for this morning. Step Sisters isn’t only the women who can meet us at a trail in North Carolina. It’s the women in Florida, Michigan, Idaho… everywhere, who shares her walk with us. The woman in Pennsylvania who cheers for another Step Sister in the comments. The woman hundreds of miles away who reads a post on this page and thinks, “Me too.” It’s the women gathering here on this page and inside our Step Sisters Walking Social Club to encourage each other, celebrate the miles, share the hard days, and remind one another to keep going. We don’t have to live in the same place to belong in the same sisterhood.
Yesterday, some of our local Step Sisters took shelter dogs out for our Dogs Day Out Walk. We are giving dogs opportunities to find their furever families. Tonight, we’ll gather again for Plant Party Game Night. We’ll play games, laugh, meet new people, and somebody is probably going to get way too competitive over winning a plant. 😂🪴
And wherever you’re reading this from, you’re part of what’s growing here, too. Walking may have been what brought many of us here, but look at what has grown around it: friendships, conversations, adventures, service, laughter, encouragement, women showing up for one another, and places—both in person and online—where you know somebody will be happy to see you.
That’s the part I didn’t fully understand when I started Step Sisters. I thought I was creating a place for women who walk. Somewhere along the way, we started creating a place for women to belong. And I needed that, too.
So on this Thankful Thursday, I want to know: What is something you didn’t realize you needed in your life until you found it? 💜
