โ€œRoses of Picardyโ€ is a popular British song written in 1916 by Frederick E. Weatherly and Haydn Wood. It became an international hit after World War I, especially among British soldiers who left sweethearts behind to fight in France and Flanders. The song compares a mysterious woman with sea-blue eyes to a rose, symbolizing her beauty and love in the foggy Picardy landscape.

Allison Gagnon, who was born in Canada, teaches Collaborative Piano at UNCSA. She and a couple of colleagues have developed an interactive music program in dementia care called "Music Between Us". Her work in this area was sparked by her own parents who suffered with dementia.

In 2019, UNCSA began the program "Artist Corps", where groups of students go to Adult Day Care Centers and sing and dance with the participants. Music is a means of human touch, and is one of the last things to be affected by cognitive decline. Some people who are withdrawn begin to have more social interaction after being a part of the program.

Allison recommended the book. "Creating Moments of Joy Along the Alzheimer's Journey" by Jolene Brackey and 2 films "Alive Inside-A Story of Music and Memory" and "Chewing the Rain with Music" for further study and insights.
