Meet Colby Cunningham, Project Designer at SFCS Architects, and one of our favorite people to have in the room.

Colby's background spans architectural and urban design, with roots in community engagement work at the Florida Center for Community Design & Research. He's spent his career using design to build more connected communities, and that's exactly what drew him to CDS.

His words on slide 2 say it better than we could.

We had a really good morning at SaySo Coffee yesterday.

Friends of CDS came through with genuine questions about what our programs look like, and what it means to get involved. The conversation was honest and easy, the way it should be.

Behind every CDS program is a group of people who chose to show up: architects, educators, neighbors, designers, and parents who believe young people deserve access to design thinking and to spaces where their ideas matter.

This is who makes it possible. If you've ever thought about getting involved, we'd love to tell you more. Join us Thursday morning at SaySo Coffee for our June Coffee Meetup. There's a short volunteer info session at 8:30am for anyone curious about our Leadership by Design High School program this summer.

Our monthly Coffee Meetup is back, and this month we have a little something extra.

Join us Thursday, June 11 at SaySo Coffee in Winston-Salem from 8:30 to 10am for our regular community gathering. No agenda, no pressure, just a low-key space to meet people, ask questions, and learn more about what CDS is up to this summer.

If you're interested in volunteering with our Leadership by Design High School program, we're holding a short info session from 8:30 to 9am right at the top of the meetup. Come a little early and stay as long as you like.

All are welcome.

This student came into LbD with one idea and a firm grip on it. By the end of the week, they understood something that takes most people years to learn: other people's thinking makes your thinking better.

That is what collaboration looks like when it's taught through real project work.

This summer, CDS is partnering with SunnySide Freedom School to bring Leadership by Design to young people in Winston-Salem.

This isn't a new relationship, we've been building it. And this year, the program has grown. We're glad to be doing this work alongside a community partner who already knows what young people in this city need.

We believe leadership isn't something you grow into, it's something you practice right now. When a young person learns to look at their community and ask 'what's missing here?', and then moves toward answering that question, something changes in them. That's the shift Leadership by Design aims to create.

May has been about getting ready: getting families excited about our Leadership by Design program, recruiting volunteers, and preparing for students to step into a week of designing with our treasured community partners, Boston-Thurmond United and Sunnyside Freedom Schools.

We’re grateful for everyone helping make this summer possible. Follow along as we get closer to our summer programs.

David West of Boston-Thurmond United learned that enthusiasm is contagious when working with our 2025 students. That's what makes volunteering for Leadership by Design so rewarding (and fun)!
