ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Joanna Henry

Meet Joanna Henry — a multidisciplinary artist and curator whose work explores the connections between Caribbean heritage and Black American culture through storytelling, memory, and lived experience.

A graduate of Winthrop University with a BFA in Painting & Drawing, Joanna also holds a Masters certification in Arts Management from University of Massachusetts Amherst. She currently serves as Artist Development Specialist for the Catawba Indian Nation Cultural Division, where she curates exhibitions and creates opportunities for tribal artisans.

Rooted in family photographs, oral histories, and Caribbean pottery traditions, Joanna’s work reflects the richness of diasporic identity and the power of cultural memory. Her practice is deeply intentional — reclaiming, affirming, and celebrating Black experiences through narrative-driven art.

SPARK is back this May!

Join us for an evening of creativity, conversation, and connection as we sit with wine educator Sherry for Sip With Sherry’s signature “Learning With A Twist” experience. Enjoy a curated flight of five wines paired with charcuterie, guided tasting notes, pairing tips, trivia with prizes, and take-home gifts.

This is an 18+ years of age experience, tickets are $40 through our website at deltaartscenter.org

SPARK (Sessions with the Passionate, Artists Revealing Knowledge) is an interactive experience where you can explore different art forms, learn from creatives, and try things for yourself.

Guests will also enjoy our current exhibition, Black by Design, featuring artists Zaire, Joanna, Michael, and Brentae. This SPARK event draws inspiration from the exhibition—highlighting how artists and designers thoughtfully combine elements to achieve their vision. Whether it’s pairing the perfect wine with cheese or layering textures in a visual composition, the process is rooted in intention, experimentation, and creativity.

Come experience how different elements come together to create something memorable.

Next on display! Black by Design: Inspired by Where the Black Designers Are by Cheryl D. Miller, this exhibition centers what’s always been true: Black designers have always been here—shaping, influencing, and redefining visual culture.

Curated by Zaire McPhearson, Black by Design brings together the work of Joanna Henry, Michael Dupuy, Brentae Holmes, and McPhearson in a powerful dialogue of memory, lineage, culture, and creative resistance. Across different practices and perspectives, the exhibition becomes a living archive—holding space for what’s been overlooked while imagining what’s possible when these voices are centered.

This exhibition opens April 21.
On view through June 27.

Come through, take your time, and experience the work.

Artwork Spotlight | Delayna Robbins

Delayna Robbins creates deeply personal work inspired by memories, dreams, and conversations. Through journaling and reflection, she has developed a personal library of symbols that form a unique visual language—one that acts as a portal into worlds exploring ancestral reverence, humanity’s connection to nature, and the shared human experience.

Influenced by Afro-Surrealism, Robbins’ practice extends beyond aesthetics. For her, the movement serves as a powerful framework for exploring identity, culture, and history while challenging audiences to reconsider narratives surrounding the Black experience. Art also functions as a form of therapy in her life, guiding her through a personal journey of healing.

Recurring motifs—such as golden scars and flowers growing from figures—symbolize resilience, growth, and transformation after trauma. Robbins’ work also draws from interviews with members of her community, incorporating stories of empowerment, love, and protection. Through these narratives, she creates spaces of escapism that move beyond harmful stereotypes, highlighting instead the beauty, strength, and resilience of Black life.

Artwork Spotlight | Eric McRay

A celebrated visual artist known for his bold, expressive style, Eric McRay brings color, rhythm, and movement to every surface he touches. A Washington, D.C. native, McRay earned his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art before becoming a vital force in North Carolina’s art scene in 1987. He joined Artspace in 1998 and later co-founded the City Market Artist Collective, helping to shape Raleigh’s creative community.

McRay’s work has been featured in national and regional publications including Fortune Small Business, Southern Living, Art Business News, and Our State Magazine, and he has been recognized by The News & Observer as one of its “Artists to Watch.” His paintings are held in prominent public and private collections, including SAS, Duke University Medical Center, NC State University, North Carolina Central University Art Museum, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and internationally through the U.S. State Department Art in Embassies Program.

Rooted in storytelling and layered with texture, McRay’s paintings often feel like visual jazz—alive with improvisation, memory, and homage.

Artwork Spotlight | Elzena Anderson

A Piedmont Triad–based artist, Elzena Anderson works primarily with acrylic on canvas, creating paintings that live between abstraction and impressionism. Through bold palettes, layered textures, and expressive compositions, her work uses color and shape as storytelling tools. Drawing from both traditional and non-traditional materials, Anderson celebrates the beauty of women and nature—often on large-scale canvases that invite viewers into moments of presence and reflection.

Her process is fluid and intuitive. Each piece grows from a feeling, fleeting observation, or lived moment, evolving through experimentation and layered mark-making. For Anderson, painting is both a space of discovery and a form of reflection.

Artworks are available for purchase.
