The West Salem neighborhood is located in the southeast corner of the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and just west of the Historic Town of Old Salem. The West Salem Residents Association, Inc., formed December 14, 1978, went into dormancy in the early 90’s due to the aging and dying out of leadership, key members moving from the neighborhood, and interest in the remaining membership waning

. In the late ninety’s the southern portion of the neighborhood joined together to fight the installation of a 400-foot transmission tower in the Holland Street area. At this time, the name of the newly formed group was the Granville Park Neighborhood Association, which later changed its name to the West Salem Neighborhood Association. In 2001, the northern portion of the neighborhood formed a group called The Wachovia Highlands Neighborhood Association, to fight crime, as well as another transmission tower at the corner of Green and Cotton Streets. As West Salem neighbors came to realize that we are truly members of the same neighborhood, in the fall of 2002, the West Salem Neighborhood Association and the Wachovia Highlands Neighborhood Association joined to bring both portions of our neighborhood together as one. West Salem is a community filled with diversity - ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural, age of residents, size and style of homes - we have it all! We also boast the largest stock of historic homes next to Old Salem, and we were added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 19, 2005. We are a diverse group whose active membership grows daily and we are always looking for ways to improve our neighborhood and get others involved. We feel that getting to know our neighbors is the key to creating a strong and healthy neighborhood. We would love to get to know you - come to our next meeting!
