🌞 Summer Reads That Inspire Action

We’re kicking off our reading series with *There Is No Place for Us* by Brian Goldstone — an eye‑opening look at America’s working homeless and the realities of housing instability.

Summer is often a season that brings renewed interest in reading. Whether a good book for a vacation trip, or shorter articles for sitting on the porch, we will be sharing reads that our staff find important to a deeper understanding of homelessness.

Meet the newest member of our team, Ashley Sutton!

Ashley came to City with Dwellings a few months ago, and he has already become a familiar, steady presence for the neighbors who walk through our doors and a grounding part of our team.

As a Community Care Navigator, he helps guests navigate the practical steps that can feel overwhelming when you're in the middle of a crisis: obtaining vital documents, applying for jobs, and working through the systems that stand between someone and stability. But he'll be the first to tell you that some of the most important work he does is simply sitting with a neighbor and listening. Ashley believes something that guides everything he does: the people we serve are just regular people too.

When he's not at the Community First Center, you might find Ashley cooking out with friends, out on the water kayaking, working through a crossword puzzle, or watching birds. We're so glad he's here.

Charlie walked into our resource day center carrying something heavier than paperwork. He had a letter. An eviction notice. A court date. And a problem that wasn’t his fault.

Assistant Director Lea Thullbury shares what walking alongside someone looks like.

Every person deserves a place to call home. At City with Dwellings, we walk alongside people experiencing homelessness and housing instability, helping them move toward a place to call home.

And we can’t do it without volunteers like you.

Join us for Volunteer Orientation on Tuesday, May 26th, from 11:30 AM to 12:45 PM at City with Dwellings.

Before you attend, you’ll need to fill out our Volunteer Interest Survey. It only takes a few minutes, and it’s your first step toward making a real difference.

Scan the QR code or visit our website to complete your inquiry today.   We’d love to see you there. Together, we can help someone find their way home.

On May 6th, the current Leadership Winston-Salem Flagship class began their Social Services Day at City with Dwellings. This caring group of leaders learned about the adverse effects of childhood trauma from Tanya Blackford, Director of Western NC Partnerships & Faculty at Crossnore Communities for Children. It set the stage for a day of learning across our social services partners in Forsyth County.
Thank you to Tanya and our friends at Leadership Winston-Salem for starting your day with us.
