One of the things I love most about this work is the opportunity to sit at tables where real change begins.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting with Robert Lee, Senior Acquisition Manager for Campbell Soup Company, to discuss how we might work together to create greater opportunities for young people in our community through Big Brothers Big Sisters Services, Inc. of Winston-Salem.

Every day, I am reminded that our children are surrounded by untapped potential. What they need are caring adults, meaningful relationships, and organizations willing to invest in their future. That’s why conversations like this matter.

With more than 110 young people currently waiting to be matched with a mentor, we know the need is great. But we also know what is possible when community leaders, corporate partners, volunteers, and advocates come together around a common purpose.

I am grateful for the conversation, encouraged by the possibilities, and excited about what the future may hold.

Because when we invest in our children, we invest in the future of our entire community.

Today, we pause to honor and celebrate an extraordinary leader, advocate, and champion for youth — Ben Hough. 💚

For 17 years, from 2009 through 2026, Ben faithfully served on the Big Brothers Big Sisters Board of Directors with unwavering dedication, vision, and heart. While words can never fully capture the magnitude of his impact, one thing is certain: this agency is stronger because of Ben Hough.

Ben’s leadership helped shape the trajectory of Big Brothers Big Sisters in transformational ways. Alongside then President & CEO Shawan Gabriel, Ben co-led the agency’s 2018 capital campaign effort, helping raise more than $2 million over several years to strengthen and expand the mission of serving youth in our community. Because of his commitment, thousands of young people and families have been positively impacted, and our entire community is better because of his service.

Recently, we gathered together with Ben, his wife, former President & CEO Shawan Gabriel, current Board Chair Adam Witten, longstanding board member Jason Wilmoth, and current Interim President & CEO Cheryl Moore to honor Ben and attempt to express the depth of our gratitude for his years of leadership, sacrifice, wisdom, and belief in this mission.

And thankfully, Ben is not going too far. We are honored that he has agreed to serve as an inaugural member of the BBBS Legacy Board — a continued reflection of his enduring commitment to defending the potential of young people. More information about this exciting new initiative will be shared in the future.

Ben, thank you for your service. Thank you for your leadership. Thank you for believing in the power of mentorship and investing in generations of young people. Your legacy will continue to live on in every life touched through this agency. 💚

✨ Please join us in welcoming Melanie Hill to the Big Brothers Big Sisters family as our new Match Support Specialist! ✨

Melanie brings more than 20 years of experience in human resources, leadership development, and employee engagement, along with a deep passion for mentorship, community impact, and helping others thrive. In her role, Melanie will support and supervise our matches to help ensure they are growing in alignment with agency policies while also strengthening relationships through encouragement, resources, and creative activity ideas for our Bigs, Littles, and families. 💚

Originally from Winston-Salem, NC, Melanie holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from High Point University and a Master of Divinity from United Theological Seminary. She is currently pursuing her doctorate from United Theological Seminary.

When she’s not serving youth and families, Melanie enjoys reading and spending time with her family and loved ones. We are excited to have her heart, experience, and leadership on our team as we continue creating and supporting life-changing mentoring relationships throughout our community! 🎉

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚🧠

At Big Brothers Big Sisters Services, Inc., we believe caring for our mental health is just as important as caring for our physical health 💪🏽✨ This month, we encourage you to be intentional about checking in with yourself—pause, reflect, and notice what you’re feeling and what you may need 🌿

Take a moment to review the questions on the image 📄 as a simple way to reset. These same questions can also be powerful conversation starters between Bigs and Littles 🗣️🤝, helping to build trust, connection, and emotional awareness 💛

Let’s continue to show up for ourselves and each other—one check-in at a time 💚
