Triad Cultural Arts

Triad Cultural Arts Juneteenth is a celebration of the country's longest-running observance of the abolition of slavery.

It commemorates the day when slaves in the last geographic area in America where slavery existed learned of their freedom. This took place on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, when Union General Gordon Granger read General Order #3, announcing that "all slaves are free" by Proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on Septembe

r 22, 1862, and issued on January 1, 1863. It took over two and a half years for the news to travel to southwest Texas. As Texans of African American descent have migrated across the United States and settled elsewhere, they have taken the observance of Juneteenth with them. More and more descendents of slaves in other states are joining in the celebration and seeking in some instances to make the holiday a legal one in their respective states. Juneteenth has become a state holiday in Texas, Massachusetts, Florida, Oklahoma, Delaware, Alaska, Idaho, Iowa, California, Wyoming, Illinois, Missouri, Connecticut, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Arkansas, Oregon, Kentucky, Michigan, New Mexico, Virginia, Washington State, Tennessee and the District of Columbia. Join us as we celebrate and recognize those African-Americans who survived the inhumane and cruel institution of slavery. It is also on this day we pay homage to the ancestors who kept safe our language, songs and customs! By connecting the present to the past, Juneteenth is a “homecoming” for all African Americans, helping to define their place within the African Diaspora.

Juneteenth is officially a holiday in the Town of Lewisville—unanimously. Even with just 4% of residents being Black, they were still the first to elect a Black mayor in all of Forsyth County.

We are so proud of Mayor Billy Carter for his leadership to bring awareness of Black culture and emancipation to the farthest reaches of the county.

We had our 1st impromptu piano recital at the Shotgun House. Thanks to Miss. Naomi for entertaining us with her talents.

Historically, working class Black families often bought upright used pianos for their homes as a demonstration of class and, often, reverence for gospel music. Did your grandparents have a piano in their house? Leave a comment below.

📅 May 21, 1865 — Freedom Comes to Salem

On this day in 1865, enslaved people in Salem, North Carolina at St. Philip's Church received life-changing news: freedom had come.

More than a month after the end of the Civil War and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops and federal authority reached parts of the South where news had been slow to arrive. In Salem, word finally spread that slavery had been legally abolished and that those who had been enslaved were free.

For many, the moment was both powerful and complex. Freedom did not arrive all at once in lived reality—there were questions, uncertainty, and the long struggle of what came next. But it marked a turning point: the beginning of a new chapter where formerly enslaved people could begin to claim autonomy, reunite families, seek wages for their labor, and build new lives in the aftermath of slavery.

May 21 remains a meaningful date in Winston-Salem’s history, often remembered as “Freedom Day,” honoring both the arrival of emancipation news in Salem and the resilience of the community that carried freedom forward into the generations that followed.

Today we remember not just the moment news arrived—but the people who lived through it, and those who built what came next.

How does Black culture contribute to the American story? We'd need 365 days to tell it all. From our docent training program to foodways programming, the Shotgun House stands as a beacon for the value of local Black history.

In honor of America 250, we are raising $250,000 to support the Shotgun House restoration, bathroom construction, and parking lot development—and we're almost halfway there! Donate by June 30 to be a part of history.
