Make tidying up simple, specific and playful—and start together.

For a young child, “Clean up” can feel like a big task. Try getting down to their level and saying:

🧱 “Let’s put the blocks in the basket. You get the blue ones, and I’ll get the red ones.”

⚽ “Can you roll the balls to me? I’ll put them in the tub!”

A few things that help:
- Give one small direction at a time: “Put these three blocks in the box.”
- Offer a choice: “Would you like to pick up the blocks or the balls first?”
- Make it a routine: “We put our toys away before we get the next activity out.”
- Notice their effort: “You put the balls away! Now we have space to play.”

If they resist, stay calm: “You don’t feel like tidying up. I’ll help you start.” Hand them one block and point to the basket.

Toddlers usually need plenty of help. The goal is to build the habit through small moments of doing it together.

Turn Your Living Room Into a Learning Lab!

You don’t need expensive toys to help your child get ready for kindergarten. So much of early learning happens in the everyday moments you already share at home!

At Kaleidoscope Play & Learn, we love showing caregivers how simple household items can unlock big learning concepts:

• 🧦The Great Sock Sort: Use laundry day to practice colors and matching pairs!
• 🥄Spoon Counting: Have your little one count out spoons while you set the table to build early math skills.
• 📦Cardboard Box Adventures: Grab an empty box and ask your child, "Where is our spaceship traveling today?" to spark imagination and storytelling.

CCRC offers these classes free to those who are unable to pay because cost should not prevent children and caregivers from accessing meaningful early learning experiences. This supports our mission to ensure quality learning experiences for every child from birth to age five in our community.

From the earliest months, children learn through their relationships and everyday experiences. A baby babbles and an adult answers. A toddler points to something new and a caregiver names it. A child asks “Why?” and someone takes time to explore the answer with them.

These simple exchanges help children develop language, build connections and begin making sense of the world around them. 💛

Plant bulbs with your children. Grow lessons that last.

A little digging and planting can turn family time into a hands-on learning adventure! Gardening gives children opportunities to practice:

🌱 Patience: Flowers take time to grow—and some things are worth waiting for.
💧 Responsibility: Caring for a garden means checking what plants need.
🔍 Curiosity: What’s inside a bulb? How do roots grow? Let their questions lead the discovery.
📏 Math skills: Count bulbs, compare sizes and measure the spaces between them.
💛 Giving back: Planting can make a difference beyond your own garden.

Let children help choose colors, count bulbs and plant alongside you. Then watch together for the first signs of spring!

A cardboard tube, a little color and a whole lot of curiosity! 🌈🔎

In our Kaleidoscope Play & Learn class, children explored colors, light and changing patterns by creating their own sensory kaleidoscopes.

As they arranged materials, turned their tubes and described what they could see, they practiced small hand movements, named colors and discovered new ways to express their ideas.

“What do you notice?”
“What changes when you turn it?”
“What happens when we add another color?”

Simple questions invite children to look closely, make predictions and share their discoveries with their caregivers. 💛
