Our Backstory
"The Founder of Our Fallen Angels, Lins Barwick, spent four months fulfilling a premedical internship in Cape Coast, Ghana at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. Angel Komenda had been buried alive by her parents six months prior to their introduction, and Angel had been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy upon her admission to the hospital. Over the four months that Lins spent in Cape Coast, Ghana he worked to raise money for Angel so that she could receive the proper care that she both needed and deserved, while also working to find her a permanent home in an orphanage. Throughout the time that he spent working with the social welfare department, the staff at the orphanage, and the staff in the healthcare sector he realized that there was a significant deficit in disability education, treatment, and care throughout the country. Following Angel's admission to an orphanage, after months of work, Lins returned to the United States with the hopes of creating a non-profit organization that would work to provide disabled children with proper care and assistance, while facilitating education and disability awareness throughout the region. After months of preparation, discussion, and partnership the non-profit organization Our Fallen Angels was founded in order to manage and fund the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital's Foundation for Children with Cerebral Palsy, to sponsor 'at-risk' children when registering for national health insurance, and to create an accepting community for all in the Piedmont and Triangle Regions of North Carolina.

About Us
"Our Fallen Angels is a non-profit organization that works to provide children in, Winston-Salem, NC and Cape Coast, Ghana with equal opportunity for healthcare and respect, no matter their socioeconomic status, their state of health or their diagnosis of a disability. At the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital in Cape Coast, Ghana our organization manages and funds the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital's Foundation for Children with Cerebral Palsy. This Foundation is led by the director of the Physiotherapy Department, Mr. Acquah utilizes the staff and faculty throughout the hospital, specifically the physiotherapy department, in order to teach the mother's and father's of children diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, and other disabilities that cause impaired movement, how to properly handle, feed, and take care of their children. The parents are then given the opportunity to ask questions, voice their concerns, or discuss any stressful or difficult situations that have arisen since the previous meeting in order to promote psychological well-being. The Executive Members of the Foundation, a group of parents and community members, also speak to the father's and mother's of children diagnosed with a disability about the importance of creating conversation and providing education about the disabilities of their children in order to create a more accepting environment in Ghana. Many people throughout the country do not understand the origins of disability and treat those that have been diagnosed with a disability as if they are inhuman or of a 'cursed' nature. We, at Our Fallen Angels, work with the local media, that of the print media and radio broadcasts, in order to spread information about disability diagnosis and its treatment to the greater population with hopes of creating a more accepting society for all. Apart from our direct management and funding of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital's Foundation for Children with Cerebral Palsy, Our Fallen Angels has partnered with the non-profit organization Global Host Project in order to register 'at-risk' children for national health insurance. 'At risk' children include those that are socioeconomically incapable of registering themselves for health insurance and are in need of immediate registration for health insurance due to their current health status. Through this project, Our Fallen Angels, is able to provide children throughout the Central Region of Ghana with the ability to receive healthcare pertinent to their survival. Lastly, Our Fallen Angels also partners with local organizations in North Carolina in order to facilitate disability awareness and education throughout the Piedmont and Triangle Regions. We work to create a community in North Carolina that offers acceptance and respect to all, no matter the circumstance.
