In a fun way to kick off the second month of Happy Hill parkrun’s existence, we had some special guests visit our event! We welcomed parkrun Regional Ambassador Tim GALLAGHER and his wife Mary Kay from Livonia parkrun, as well as parkrun tourist and event director from Anacostia parkrun, Graeme MCGUFFICKE. We really appreciate the support!

This week we had 10 participants, with one parkrun first timer: Monique OCONNELL! Of our 10 participants, four had personal bests: Jessica RICHARD, Ben MASTERS, David LYTTLE, and Jeffery MOORE. Congratulations to you all, and thank you to everyone who came out! And a great thank you to our “hi-vis heroes,” the 7 volunteers who made this week possible: Daniel DAVIS, Melody MCMICHAEL, Mary K GALLAGHER, JJ ERNEST, Jane PATTERSON, Tim GALLAGHER, and Adam ERNEST.

We hope everyone had a wonderful, not-too-humid morning with us yesterday, and we can’t wait to do it all again next week!

We're super close to having our 100th ever finisher at Happy Hill parkrun! Want it to be you? Come on out this Saturday at 8:00am for Happy Hill parkrun's 4th event! Enjoy our first little milestone with us and be cheered on for completing a 5K on the Salem Creek Greenway, no matter your pace - walkers, joggers, runners, dogs, and strollers are all welcomed and encouraged!

Super inspiring story, and proof that parkrun can be for anyone, no matter the obstacles you're facing. Kudos to Kash! 💪

Super inspiring story, and proof that parkrun can be for anyone, no matter the obstacles you're facing. Kudos to Kash! 💪

Do you remember your first parkrun?

For Kash, 37, his first parkrun came when everything felt like it was collapsing: a brain tumour diagnosis, and navigating life with autism, anxiety, and depression 🧡

Yet running gave him something the tumour couldn't touch: space…

Today marked Happy Hill parkrun’s third event, and it was a bit of a wet one! The forecast was indecisive on whether we’d get rain, but it remained just a mist until we were wrapping up. So our 18 participants didn’t have to get too soaked, as long as they managed to dodge the couple of puddles on the trail! So long as the trail is safe and accessible, Happy Hill parkrun commits to being a rain or shine event!

More eventful than the weather at today’s parkrun was our wannabe first place barkrunner! We had two dog participants today: one well-behaved Oshie and one overzealous Cinnamon, the latter of whom escaped her harness at the start line and tried to take first place! In the words of our first finisher, Phil, “I’m disappointed that you chased her down and stopped her, because she was pacing me pretty well.” We love barkrunners, but we will ensure for future events that they stay controlled on a leash! Remember Cinnamon, parkrun isn’t a race, so no need to rush into first. ;) Unfortunately the dog antics occupied our photographer a bit, so we don’t have as many pictures as the past few weeks; guess you’ll just have to come back next week if you want a pic of you crossing the finish line!

With that excitement, today's event would not have been possible without the help of our incredible volunteers. Huge thank you to Daniel, Melody, Braden, Jason, and my brother JJ for expertly manning the finish line while I helped wrangle Cinnamon, and also thank you to my girlfriend Rachel for tail walking and my mom Jane for helping with setup!

We had three finishers who completed their first ever parkrun with us this morning: William, Ben (who’d been a big help marshaling for our first event and running the course with me on our test event), and Brian R (whose sons ran high school cross country with me! So thanks for visiting, and sorry I didn’t get a big chance to chat!). In addition, 8 other participants today were first timers to Happy Hill parkrun specifically; whether you were just passing through or might wind up being regulars to parkrun in Winston-Salem, we appreciate you joining us today!

And on the topic of visitors, we had multiple tourists from parkruns near and far! Phil, Gordon, Dave, and Faith joined us from Durham, NC; Brian K. and Victor came from today’s canceled Creekside parkrun; Bryan S. joined us from Charlotte; and John and Kristen came all the way from my family’s very first parkrun: Baltimore and Annapolis Trail in Maryland! We love all the support from other parkrun communities, and thanks to John, Kristen, Phil, and David for joining us at Panera afterwards!

Last up, we have a parkrun regional ambassador coming to next week’s event (where we should see our 100th finisher!), so in honor of that we’re doing a parkrun get-together dinner the night before! So on Friday, July 31st, all are welcome to join us at Mellow Mushroom in Winston-Salem at 6:30 for some carb loading and conversations the night before our fourth event!

One of the great things about parkrun is that it's easy to maintain your healthy habits since we hold events every week - rain or shine!

Plus, even if the rain doesn't hold off, it's certainly going to be cooler than it was last week!

Happy Hill parkrun Event #2 in the books! Bit of a smaller crowd without the inaugural event tourist boost, but we had 13 finishers who braved the high heat, humidity, and moderate air quality index! No milestones this week, but we had four tourists from our closest parkrun neighbor, Creekside parkrun Today's event was made possible by seven amazing volunteers (I remembered the volunteer picture this time! Melody - Pre-Event Setup - not pictured, however). Navigate to our Google Photos album for more pictures: https://photos.app.goo.gl/a3tRSJW9xQh5rEseA

Also, two important notices:
1st: If you were the 4th or 5th finisher (red shirt Creekside tourist and guy with the blue shorts), we unfortunately didn't get your personal barcode to go through! If you see this post and let us know that was you, or come next week to do the same, we can update the results to get you your credit and time. Apologies for the technical problems! Hopefully we've worked out most of the kinks.
2nd: Apologies as well that the course was a little long this week! The turnaround was a bit father than it was the week before, but we'll make sure that doesn't happen again as well.

See you next week for Event #3!!

Words can not describe how excited we are to post that the very first parkrun event in Winston-Salem, NC, Happy Hill Event #1, was a success!! It was a long process to get off the ground, but we are so grateful to be able to spread parkrun closer to home, and are beyond appreciative of everyone who showed up and who helped make it a success.

Now for the stats! We had 58 finishers, 11 volunteers, and tourists from all over North Carolina (Creekside parkrun Durham, and Little Sugar Creek), Peace Valley Pennsylvania, and beyond - even Dublin, Ireland!

Being our first event, every single finisher was a first timer at Happy Hill! However, we also had 14 parkrun first timers:
> Adam Williams
> Jaden Carter
> Xel Wilbur
> Kristin Giordano
> Martha Rodrigo Schuck
> Natalia Moraes
> Lee Neitzle
> Meg Neitzle
> Ryan Price
> Sheri Masters
> Ann Davis-Rowe
> David Masters
> Maryann Leftwich
> Athena Torres..and 5 first time volunteers:
> Ben Masters
> Daniel Davis
> Melody McMichael
> Rachel Masters
> Tricia Masters
We hope to see you all next week!

And as for milestones, we had JJ Ernest - my favorite brother - who timed it right to hit his 5️⃣0️⃣th parkrun as a participant on our big day!

Also, while parkrun isn’t a race, and we are so inspired by everyone’s finish times, we thought Waldemar Brigido Junior deserves special recognition as the first ever Happy Hill parkrun finisher!

Last but certainly not least, I regrettably forgot to take a volunteer picture, but we were generously supported by a strong group of volunteers:
> Daniel Davis - Timekeeper
> Melody McMichael - Barcode Scanning
> Tricia Masters - Finish Token Distributor
> Amy Charles - Tail Walker
> Mark Bucknall - Event Day Course Check
> Ben Masters - Pre-event Setup, Turnaround Marshal
> Jane Patterson - First Timer’s Welcome, Pre-event Setup
> Richard Ernest - Pre-event Setup
> Rachel Masters - Pre-event Setup, parkwalker
> JJ Ernest - Pre-event Setup, parkwalker
> Adam Ernest - Run Director
If you’d like to volunteer next (or any other) week, please shoot us an email ([email protected]) or message! We’d really appreciate it!

(Oh, and if you’re wondering why you don’t remember seeing the nice looking Happy Hill parkrun sign that’s in the pictures, it’s because parkrun hasn’t sent it to us yet so I had to add it in post. 😅 It didn’t feel right without it).
