Did you know that The Dwelling served 37,069 meals in 2025? We are proud to partner with Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC to make this herculean task happen! Second Harvest distributes between 35 and 40 tons of food through their member network to feed our hungry neighbors. What a blessing they are to our community, and especially to our ministry here at The Dwelling!

Maybe the person standing at the edge of the table understands something about the table that the people sitting comfortably around it have missed.
She believes that what Jesus has to give cannot possibly be exhausted by giving it away. That even the crumbs have power.
And she is right.
Because the story of Jesus will keep moving.
There will be more bread.
There will be another table.
Eventually Jesus will sit down with his disciples, take bread into his hands again, bless it, break it, and give it away.
Except this time he will say: This is my body. Again he will feed us.
God doesn't toss us a crumb.
God gives us God's own self.
And that changes how we understand the table.
Because if the One at the center of the table is the crucified Christ, then we don't get to act like we own the bread.
We don’t get to control the bread.
We don't get to stand beside Jesus deciding who deserves a piece of the bread.
Because we are all people who came hungry.
We are all people living on grace we did not manufacture.
We are all eating bread that somebody else broke for us.
And maybe that should make us less interested in guarding the table and more interested in noticing who is still standing at its edges.

We are so excited that Voices from the Dwelling is kicking off their creative process today! Authoring Action and The Dwelling have developed an engagement that amplifies the voices of Winston-Salem’s unhoused and housing insecure. Through a series of Creative Writing workshops, and in collaboration with local artists, authors from The Dwelling have written monologues, poems, stories, and songs that give a glimpse into the full personhood of people living on the margins of our community. Their stories challenge the stereotypes that exist about people experiencing homelessness, and name the realities of the broken systems that may unwittingly contribute to the oppressive qualities of homelessness - individually, culturally and systemically.
