From our co-founder, Terrence "TP" Petree:
Back when I hooped at UNC, prior to one game, a supporter coined the phrase and made custom shirt that read "TP Is My Hero," and the rest is history. But truth is, many may see it as only about me, which is far from true, walk with me.
"TP Is My Hero" is not simply about me and the good example I try to be for our young people, it is a triple entendre, a selfless play on words with 3 different meanings:
1. Sometimes you have to be your own hero.
Yes, my name is TP and yes, I believe in me. But please understand, here TP can be a placeholder name for any of us. You, too, can and should be your own hero.
2. Sometimes someone else is your hero.
This one was inspired by my grandfather, Teddy Petree SR. In our family and beyond, he is widely known as the "Original TP," as he was first with the initials, and we now have over 10 family members with initials TP. His aura, character, humor make him one of one, and I have always looked up to my grandfather. OG TP, your flowers π
3. Sometimes youβre someone elseβs hero.
As a Tar Heel, the fans have always shown me tremendous love. As an artist, the fans have always shown me tremendous love. In general, the people have always shown me tremendous love. Knowing I have inspired many along the way is incredible. It is also a responsibility I wear daily, since a kid, minus the cape. From then until now, the love and admiration I receive from the community is special and I am forever thankful. But more importantly, to all the amazing individuals reading, never doubt that you, may also be someone's hero in this world.
With recent events in our community and the holidays, I want to focus on the first meaning this year. I want people to know, you may not always have support from others, but if you love and believe in yourself, if you be your own hero, you can live your dreams, you can provide for your family, you can make the team, you can graduate from school.
I recall an officer once asking me what the name means, and now we know.
We can all be heroes.
